Carp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Carp, native to Eurasia, were introduced into North America to great fanfare as "the world's finest fish" in 1877.
Carp have taken much of the blame for the loss of native species in the U.S. However, native fish populations were suffering even before introduction of carp.
Carp simply have an ability to survive in water that has been polluted by years of unregulated industrial discharge better than many sensitive native species.

Carp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Australia, where the dominant Carp strain was illegally introduced, there is overwhelming anecdotal evidence and mounting scientific evidence that Carp do indeed raise water turbidity, destroy a number of submergent macrophyte species, and consequently seriously impact upon aquatic ecosystems and native fish species dependent upon those submergent macrophytes.
Carp have taken much of the blame for the loss of native species in the U.S. It can be argued that US native fish populations were suffering even before introduction of carp.

 The Bream
THE BREAM is an inhabitant of many of the lakes and rivers of the continent of Europe generally, even as far north as Norway and Sweden.
Bream in Norfolk were formerly of no value, now they fetch half a crown a bushel; large roach and rudd fetch the same price, and even more during Lent and the Hebrew Passover, when there is a great demand for these fish at Birmingham, Manchester, and other large inland towns.
BIOLOGY The bream prefers warm, slow-flowing or stagnant waters and its typical habitat is the lowland reaches of large rivers; it is also found in brackish water in Holland, Germany and in the Baltic.

 Bream fishing
Small bream or ‘skimmers’ are silver in colour but can still be easily distinguished from other silver fish, such as roach, by their slimy sides and downturned mouths.
Bream are also lazy creatures, unwilling to chase a bait in the same way as a nimble dace would.
As bream are not great fighters and will not tear off and break your line when hooked, you can use the line clip on the reel’s spool to ensure that you cast the same distance every time.

In fact, there are two main species of bream in British waters - the common or bronze bream, and the silver bream - and the fish are capable of hybridising with roach and rudd.
In contrast, the bronze bream has a smaller eye and 51-60 lateral line scales, and its throat or pharyngeal teeth are different to those of its smaller cousin.
Quite why bream form large shoals is open to debate, but this behaviour is probably related to the instinct to survive - to provide ‘safety in numbers’ from predators or to help locate food for all to share.
