Carpathian Forest - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Carpathian Forest is a Norwegian fl metal band formed by Nattefrost and Nordavind in 1990.
Since the release of the band's now-legendary Bloodlust and Perversion demo in 1992 and the Journey Through The Cold Moors Of Svarttjern promo of 1993, Carpathian Forest have gained a cult status in the Norwegian fl metal scene.
Carpathian Forest are unique among fl metal bands in that their usual lyrical themes deal with not only satanism, evil, anti-christianity, etc. but sadism, sexual depravity, suicide, and other morbid subjects in addition to usual fl metal themes.

 Conifers
These problems are of particular importance for spruce forests of the Ukrainian Carpathians, where excessive forest exploitation during the last one and a half centuries and the application of seed material of unknown origin during forest growing have led to decreases of many spruce stands and to considerable economic losses.
In the spruce forest zone two ecologically and cenotically different levels are singled out: the upper level with pure spruce forests (higher than 1200 m) and the lower level with mixed spruce forests that include fir and beech.
Composite natural spruce forests prevail in the northeast and occur in the southwest microaspects of the Ukrainian Carpathians at elevations of 900-1200 m.

Carpathian Forest's rock n' roll fl metal style featured on last year's Strange Old Brew made it the sleeper fl metal pick of the year.
The songs are still totally Carpathian Forest, but are a step down from the excellent material on the previous album.
Carpathian Forest's unique bass and guitar tones are still intact, as is guitarist/vocalist R. Nattefrost's perfectly suited fl metal vocals.

Sure, Carpathian Forest has used keys before, and well (like on Strange Old Brew's "The Return of the Freezing Wind"), but this is an entirely different matter.
It's not all disappointing, although in the same breath we have to say that the album picks up at the second to last track, which features saxophone, and the last track, which is a sort of trip-hoppy with a scratchy record sound on top.
As awful as the notion is, it seems that Carpathian Forest have become caricatures of themselves.

Norway's Carpathian Forest as of late are about as prolific as it gets in fl metal.
Apart from a new line-up, featuring members of In The Woods..., Blood Red Throne, Carpathian Forest are up to their old tricks of mid-tempo, dirty, bedraggled fl metal.
Overall, Carpathian Forest's Morbid Fascination of Death isn't quite as striking as its predecessor, but precious few out there are as "necro" and musical as these rawhide rockers.

CARPATHIAN FOREST, just the name should put a smile upon the face of every blasphemer living on this planet.
I think it was smart of Nattefrost to lay CARPATHIAN FOREST on the shelf for a while, too get the focus back.
There are some very good songs on "Defending The Throne Of Evil", but I think this is the weakest CARPATHIAN FOREST record to date, and that tells a lot about the quality of this band.

After what seems like a very long period of silence, these Norwegian fl metallers have finnaly unleashed something new in the form of this short but brilliant MCD on Avantgarde.
Track one is entitled, appropriately enough, "Carpathian Forest", and starts things off on a good foot with its pounding drums and (un)godly Hellhammer styled riffing.

"Carpathian Forest must be destroyed!," screams the CD booklet for Defending the Throne of Evil -- proof that Norway's Carpathian Forest may not be taking themselves entirely seriously.
Which has always been the band's charm, so to speak; like other fl metal acts, the delivery is poker-faced and anti-Christian, guitars encrusted with grime, vocals shrieking like squirrels trapped in the garbage disposal, and double-bass tempos veering nearly out of control.
However, too much of Defending, solid as it is, takes a conservative path, leaving Carpathian Forest's strong points -- experimental indulgences, tongue-in-cheek S&M lyrical excursions, and the stripped-down rock & roll glory of past albums -- in relatively short supply here.

CoC : Carpathian Forest - Defending the Throne of Evil : Review
Towards the end of the 1990s, as most of the Norwegian fl metal scene were busy diluting their own essence with modern electronics, disco beats, Barbie dolls and whatever other un-kvlt stuff came their way, Carpathian Forest maintained their dignity as one of the few remaining devotees to old-school ethics.
See, this is the problem with Carpathian Forest attempting an album like this.
Unfortunately, Carpathian Forest have tried to do too much in too small a space, and now they too have diluted their essence.

For the first 6 years of their existence, Carpathian Forest lived in self-imposed exile from the Norge BM scene; they didn't socialize with their media-hyped, church-burning countrymen, and they didn't promote their music with live gigs or interviews.
Half the lyrics are about death, alone-ness and the confounding beauty of the Norwegian landscape, and the other half are slash'em up, whore-killing stuff that Nattefrost refers to as "sadomasochistic" (mistakenly, I think).

An evening of Norwegian fl metal served up only the way that Carpathian Forest could, with plenty of dark makeup, a filthy, overweight and clad-only-in-a-jockstrap bass player, two dancers (also overweight and decidedly nude and deeply unattractive), plus all the musical violence, aural assault, that you’d want to fix your ears on.
