A phylogeographic approach to the Carpobrotus invasion in the western Mediterranean.
The genetic aspect of the thesis aims to precise the different taxonomic entities (parents and hybrids) of Carpobrotus and their diffusion pattern at the level of the western Mediterranean Basin.
A primary hypothesis suggests that the existence of superabundant, introduced, dispersing mammals (Garenne rabbits and fl rats) could explain the blatantly more rapid expansion and diffusion of Carpobrotus on islands rather than on the continent, where the densities of these mammals are clearly lower.

Hi Brian, The carpobrotus you describe fits well the species C chilensis and it's hybrids so you will find it very hard to positively identify.
I quote "distinguished by it's branches being usually tinged red to deep purplish-red,apart from their purplish petaloid staminodes".
I believe he is very approachable and can very probably give you the information you require.
