In order to do this though I would either have to use software to interface with relay controls built to control the HVAC from the Carputer, or move the HVAC controlls to a differn't location in the dash..
working more with the relay controls after the main Carputer install so I will be leaveing the contols where they are for the reconstruction of the dash but likely attaching servos/motors to them for control at a later date.
I still have more reseach and planning to do on this step of the project and for now it is falling to the way side for the more importaint initial install.

I had been using a 36 inch IDE cable to wire the 2.5″ hard drive running the Carputers OS, and ever since I switched that long IDE cable for a short one the system has been totally stable, surviving easily cranking, and long spans of time with the car shut off.
As a result of car manufactorers dislike for putting lots of wires through the steering column to the steering wheel, the controls on a steering wheel are usually put through a resistive network and then fed through a single wire back to a controling box that decodes the signal.
I’ve recently done some work to my Carputer, work that has caused odd behavior in the rest of the electrical systems of the car.

I had some trouble installing the drivers on the carputer, and when we got on the road, I found out they weren’t working at all.

The advantages of a laptop drive in a carputer are many, firstly they are built to take a few more knocks than your typical desktop drive.
The first part of adding new music to the carputer is ripping it off the CD, to store it on the hard drive of the Strifeputer (which is a low power 24/7 wireless server I have running in my house).
I also attempted to operate my carputer without the cars engine running, a feat that the ITPS could only manage if the battery was freshly recharged and even then, only for a matter of minutes.

I Mounted a Belkin 4 Port Hub behind the glove box,, this allows me to add the rollup keyboard and store this in the glovebox., I can also plug in here the CD/DVD drive USB contoller, and the Griffin Powermate which will be used as a scroller/controller type input device.
This was the most difficult and most satisfying part of the Carputer project.
I was stuck for a decent place to mount the 7” Touchscreen as I already had the factory sat nav screen where the ideal position would have been,

I'm gonna go ahead with the carputer project and will start a thread about it with all the steps I take so that if someone else wants to do it they can benefit from my experience.
With the carputer project, you will certainly lose steering wheel controls...but you would likely be installing a touchscreen, different choices there.
FOLKS...please understand that the carputer will have to be CUSTOM...as in custom computer/laptop as well as screen molded into the dash...you currently can not purchase a unit for your car...

I only use the Mastero SDC to shut off all the power to the carputer about 20 seconds after Windows has hibernated.
I only really wanted the Mastero SDC for the power off option, so I didn't bother connecting it up to the carputer off switch therefore it doesn't control the Windows shutdown.
The main stumbling block to my carputer had been the cost of the cheapest available vga touchscreen monitor, which was the Xenarc.

Rear cam comes on when put in reverse or you can flip the switch behind the monitor to turn it on when you want and leave it on.
When can press the "S" button on the monitor and select the front cam as long as the truck is not in reverse or the rear cam switch is not on.

Quite a bit smaller than the regular green beast :-) As you can see, I still have to use the standard-type powersupply for the CD-ROM, and the PSU needs to be connected to the motherboard of my old PC to get a closed circuit.

I am waiting to do all this because it's my 7 year anniversary next week and Lord knows if she new I was working on my carputer, I wouldn't be around much longer.
I'm building a carputer for under $500 and thats with the touch screen monitor, and I had my laptop in the car and wow its complicating everything I try to do because the brightness on laptops arn't bright enough for in the car.
