Monteagudo said the raiders were composed of communist rebels operating in the area of Carranglan and Pantabangan and augmented by guerrillas operating in nearby Nueva Vizcaya.

CABANATUAN CITY -- Armed men suspected to be members of the communist New People's Army (NPA) burned a Metro Manila-bound passenger bus on a mountain highway in Carranglan town, Nueva Ecija province, on Tuesday, police said.
Bus driver Gavino Reyes reported the incident to the public assistance center in Barangay Digdig, Carranglan, which was about 7 km away from the area where the bus was burned.
Reports here said the group was collecting revolutionary taxes from bus companies plying the Manila-Cagayan Valley route and firms that resisted were "punished" by setting on fire their buses.

Local residents, including some barangay officials, according to reports reaching Narcise, reported the presence of the big number of NPA guerrillas in Sasmuan to army authorities.
