However, Dolphins directors were shocked and sent into panic mode recently when the Gold Coast Bulletin reported that the AFL has had lengthy discussions with the Gold Coast City Council discussing the possibility of a struggling Victorian-based AFL club relocating to Carrara Stadium in 2006.
All of a sudden in the space of a few days, Carrara Stadium– which has been deserted since 1998 with no conceivable future in sight – had become the fighting point between these two powerful football codes for further national expansion.
The Gold Coast Rollers, The Gold Coast Seagulls, The Gold Coast Chargers and the struggling “Brisbane” Bears who relocated from Carrara in 1993 are just some of the ghosts of the past in this perennial sporting graveyard.

AFANA Footy News -- Mon Night Footy Return in 2006 -- 5/29/2005 at 4:00am ET
Gold Coast consortium managing director Michael Searle emerged from the meeting with Queensland's Minister for Sport Terry Mackenroth on April 30 with a guarantee the funds would be available to either build a stadium - most likely at a large parcel of land next to the Robina railway station - or re-develop Carrara Stadium.
Late last month, the Queensland Government approved $80 million in funding to build a 25,000-seat stadium on the Gold Coast, which in turn depended on the NRL granting a team licence and the Gold Coast City Council supplying the land.
Searle said he also preferred the Robina site due to its proximity to the main highway and railway line, but he was just happy the Gold Coast had been promised a rectangular-shaped stadium.
