Surigao del Sur is a province of the Philippines located in the Caraga region in Mindanao.
Its capital is Tandag and borders Surigao del Norte to the north, Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur to the west, and Davao Oriental to the south.
It is bounded on the Northwest by the Province of Surigao del Norte, on the Southeast by Davao Oriental, on its Eastern side by the Pacific Ocean, and on the West and Southwest by the Provinces of Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur.

In 1609, Juan de la Vega who was sent by the Spanish government to Surigao to subdue the hostile natives after Legaspi's final conquest of the Philippines, established a symbol of authority by erecting a stone fort and built a small settlement about the size of the football field enclosed by a stone wall.
Surigao was then called Caraga, a district which covered the present province of Agusan, the two Surigao and a part of Davao.
As center of faith and capital town of Surigao or Caraga, Tandag was fortified with cottas which were erected sometime by the 18th century within the northern side of the town and near the old cemetary at its west.

The name Carrascal started to be chronicled in folklore including three Boholano Adventurer Fishermen by mid 19th century who used to "Caras" multitude of fish swarming closely in the shoreline.
Although majority of the local folks still obtain their primary livelihood in fishing and planting local crops, new livelihood programs sponsored by the Local Government Unit are now sprouting and the town itself is on its way to development and progress.
The urbanization process of Carrascal has gained very little headway, as the population remains to be rural.
