 Alive!
Wind howled around the 200-metre high walls of the corrie where they had chosen to camp (situated between Carrauntoohill and Been Keragh) and slammed into their tents from every direction.
They had no radio, and were first made aware of the approaching storm on meeting another party descending from the peak by the shore of Lough Callee.
On voicing their intention to camp by the Eagle’s Nest, members of the second party assured the lads that they would probably be able to weather the storm in the shelter of the corrie.

Funtrek Hiking and Walking Activities - 1-877-FUNTREK
The mountains are small by world standards (Ireland's highest mountain, Carrauntoohill is 1039 meters high), but many rise directly from sea level, so that every metre of height must be climbed on foot.
Along much of the West Coast the hills come close to the sea, and the coast is indented with bays and fjords, offering the walker that wonderful combination of hills and the sea.
Pride of place must go to the Iveragh Peninsula; here are the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, with the highest mountain in Ireland, Carrauntoohill (1039 metres high) and half a dozen more nearly as high, all offering fine walking for the experienced.
