Mechanism for aiding carriage return in video disc player (US4225141)
The player is equipped with a first drive mechanism, including a turntable-driven pulley, for utilizing the common drive belt for translating the carriage during playback toward the center of a turntable at a speed correlated to the speed of rotation of the turntable while stylus/record engagement is effected.
In such players, a record caddy is used to push the carriage back to a starting position away from the turntable center, when it is at a position other than at the starting position during a caddy insertion into the player.
A mechanism is provided for rendering the slip clutch disabled during a caddy insertion, whereby restoration of the carriage to the starting position can be effected with freedom from interference by the first drive mechanism, when the carriage is at a position other than at the starting position during such a caddy insertion.

Carriage return - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computing, the carriage return (CR) is one of the control characters in ASCII code, Unicode or EBCDIC that commands a printer or other sort of display to move the position of the cursor to the first position on the same line.
It was mostly used along with line feed, a move to the next line, while carriage return precedes line feed to indicate a new line.
Many computer programs use the carriage return character, alone or with a line feed, to signal the end of a line of text, but other characters are also used for this function (see newline); others use it only for a paragraph break (a hard return).

Originally, carriage return was the term for the key, lever, or mechanism in general that would cause the cylinder on which the paper was held (the carriage) to return to the right after a line of text had been typed, and would often move it down a line as well.
The symbol ↵ derives from this, as it or variants thereof were often found on the carriage return key (the analog analogue of the modern Enter key).
In computing, the carriage return (CR) is one of the control characters in ASCII code or EBCDIC that commands a printer or other sort of display to move the position of the cursor to the first position on the same line.

 XML.com: Controlling Whitespace, Part Two
When result tree whitespace characters -- in particular, carriage returns -- aren't coming out the way you want them, this element is handy for both adding and preventing whitespace in your result document.
elements to each have a single carriage return and only a single carriage return as their contents, their end-tags must be right at the beginning of the line after the start-tag.
This splits the carriage returns after those labels off to where they're no longer next to non-whitespace characters and will therefore be ignored by the XML processor that hands this stylesheet to the XSLT processor.

Hey, Scripting Guy! How Can I Remove the Last Carriage Return-Linefeed in a Text File?
Unfortunately, though, the text file invariably has a carriage return-linefeed at the end, and that carriage return-linefeed is causing problems when you try passing the contents of the file as a query.
Well, the carriage return-linefeed actually consists of two separate characters: the carriage return (with an ASCII value of 13) and the linefeed (with an ASCII value of 10).
As we noted earlier, this means checking to see if the last two characters in the file consist of a carriage return character and a linefeed character.
