Carrick, formerly an ecologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory in Ann Arbor, Michigan, spent most of the summer of 2002 as chief scientist on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Lake Guardian, a research vessel investigating the Lake Erie dead zone.
Carrick thinks the mussels may be causing the low-oxygen area by filtering large volumes of water, in the process straining out organic material and depositing it onto the lake bottom near them.
