Carrickmacross is made by applying fine cambric or muslin to a net base, the design being outlined with a thick thread and the surplus fabric cut away to form the pattern on the net base.
Carrickmacross lace originated in the early 1820's and its style was inspired by some examples of appliqué lace collected by Mrs Grey Porter, wife of the rector of Donaghmoyne, a village some two-and-a-half miles north east of the town of Carrickmacross in County Monaghan, on her honeymoon in Italy in 1816.
Mrs Grey Porter and her family continued to live in the Carrickmacross area for almost three decades after her introduction of the lace-making craft there, through the period of the first flowering of the craft and its decline in the 1840s due to overproduction.

Carrickmacross lace is worked with a very small fine steel hook with Lace is made with a sewing needle.
The materials used are very fine net, made from cotton or silk or fine muslin, translucent enough to allow the pattern to be seen through it.
The exposed net is then decorated with filling stitches such as double dot, basket, daisy, cobweb, etc. The finished lace is edged with tiny loops and the complete piece is then detached from the pattern.

CARRICKMACROSS a market and post-town, and a parish, in the barony of FARNEY, county of MONAGHAN, and province of ULSTER, 20 miles (S. by S.) from Monaghan town, and 40 (N. by N.) from Dublin city; containing 12,610 inhabitants, of which number, 2970 are in the town.
This place derives its name from its situation on a rock and from one of its early proprietors, and is the only town in the barony.
