The laces is made by first made by attaching fine muslin to a net base, with the main part of design outlined in embroidery on both the muslin and net.
While many other styles of lace died out in the early 20th century, Carrickmacross lace remained strong, primarily thanks to the St Louis Convent in the town whose pupils continue to be taught the craft right to the present time.
Lace as made in a workshop at the convent, at first Irish Crochet lace, but later the fine needlepoint lace that became associated with the area.

Carrickmacross Lace originated in the early 1820's and it's style was inspired by some examples of applique lace collected by Mrs.
The survival of Carrickmacross Lace in the twentieth century is due to the nuns of the St. Louis Order who established a convent in the town and set up a lace making class in 1897.
The lace is still associated with wedding dresses, for instance that worn by Princess Diana at her marriage to Prince Charles when her gown had its sleeves trimmed with Carrickmacross Lace.

Carrickmacross is a beautiful market town, it developed around the Earl of Essex Castle in 1630, and the convent of the St Louis Nuns is now in its place.
The nuns were responsible for the revival of lace making; Carrickmacross Lace Co-operative has been responsible for keeping the tradition alive to this day.
Carrickmacross town is 350 years old but it has a church traditional dating back further to Patrician times in the 5th century.

It measures: 485x26 cms (192x11 inches); Condition is good throughout; however it is obvious that at one point part of the lace became damp which gave rise to an alteration in colour and caused a few bridges to break (see last photograph)
The lace work is very trying to the sight and I am often glad of an order from ladies who pay money and get a better price that what the shop people do after working all day as I have said I earn but a bare 7d.
