His son, Mike Campbell has announced his candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina in 2006.
In response to University of South Carolina President James B. Holderman's resignation amid charges of financial mismanagement, and Operation Lost Trust, a federal investigation of bribery and drug use allegations against members of the South Carolina legislature, Campbell appointed a citizen's advisory panel on government reform.
On the national political stage, he served as state campaign chairman for Ronald Reagan's presidential campaign in 1980 and 1984, and as southern regional chairman for George H. Bush's presidential campaign in 1988.
