  Carsten Peter Thiede at AllExperts
Carsten Peter Thiede (8 August 1952 West Berlin - 14 December 2004) was a German biblical scholar from the 20th century, best known for his textual criticism of the Dead Sea Scrolls, including the hopeful identification of the 7Q5 papyrus as a fragment of the Gospel of Mark.
Thiede was an advocate for O'Callaghan's claims that numerous portions of the Qumran scrolls from Cave 7 are actually Christian New Testament texts from pre AD 70.
In December 1994, Thiede's redating of the Magdalen papyrus, which bears a fragment in Greek of the Gospel of Matthew, to the later 1st century on palaeographical grounds provoked much debate.

Carsten Peter Thiede was already a purportedly controversial and world-class scholar with his work on the roguishly new dating of Mark's gospel when he approached this unprecedented and ground-breaking investigation of the Titulus of Santa Croce, in Rome.
Furthermore, to prove that the titulus belonged to Christ, Thiede has to establish a definite connection between the crucifixion and that part of the cross actually coming to the Roman Empire in the 4th century, because said titulus is from Santa Croce, the church in Rome.
What Thiede does is to try to produce legitimate connections to the titulus which was carried back by Helena, and the actual titulus of Christ by citing logical coincidences of events that could only happen during the specific range of the time of Christ.

REVIEW: Carsten Peter Thiede, Rekindling the Word: In Search of Gospel.
Thiede further speculates that when they returned to Jerusalem a decade after the war they built the first synagogal church on Mount Zion on "the rubble of their former living quarters" (89).
Thiede confidently assures the reader at the end that the Vatican bones appear to be from the period of Peter and "archaeological and church historical evidence reliably prove the tomb's location on the southern slope of the Vatican hill" (73).
Thiede's eye is only looking for anything in any New Testament text that can be used to argue that it must have been written in its present form before 70, and by the apostle whose name is attached to that text.

 Refutation of C. P. Thiede
In his book entitled "The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Jewish Origins of Christianity," (1) Carsten Thiede continues to reject the identification of certain Greek papyrus fragments from Qumran Cave 7 with various portions of I Enoch that was made in 1988 by G. Wilhelm Nebe.
Although some of them in their own right merit a detailed response, most of Thiede's objections can be readily dismissed as a waste of "too much printer's ink." (12) None the less, they are all enumerated below for the purpose of refuting them, one by one.

It is appropriate in this context to note the death of the provocative scholar Carsten Peter Thiede.
As conscientious in his methods as he was controversial in his claims, Thiede issued a magnificent challenge to the liberal orthodoxy which had prevailed in his field for generations.
Thiede’s ambition was to lay the intellectual foundations of what he called a “new paradigm” in Gospel scholarship, as simple in its arguments as it was provocative to the academic establishment.

 The Cosmopolitan World of Jesus
Carsten Peter Thiede shatters the popular conception of Christ’s Palestine as an isolated backwater, depicting it instead as a highly cultured part of the Roman Empire.
Thiede reconstructs the world of Jesus using an interdisciplinary approach, employing evidence from archaeologists, papyrologists, philologists and classic historians.

 Eyewiness to Jesus
Thiede and d'Ancona boldly tell the story of two scholars a century apart who stumbled on the oldest known remains of the New Testament--hard evidence confirming that St. Matthew's Gospel is the account of an eyewitness to Jesus.
Carsten Peter Thiede is a leading authority on ancient manuscripts (a papyrologist).
But in 1994, Dr. Carsten Peter Thiede re-examined them and found that they were copies of the original Gospel of Matthew, dating to A.D. 40-70, and were in fact an eyewitness account written by one of Christ's contemporaries.

No Nu in Line 2 of 7Q5, Part 2
Stefan Enste, who is harshly criticized by Thiede in the same endnote, also published a book in 2000 outlining in detail the arguments for and against the Markan identification of 7Q5.
Carsten Thiede has asserted that "there is no alpha anywhere in Greek papyri which even looks remotely like the traces left on the papyrus." In other words, the ink traces shown below cannot possibly belong to an alpha.
Carsten Thiede has also claimed that the traces of ink on line 2 are certainly that of the letter nu.

This precious relic was brought to Rome and for centuries was venerated in the Church of the Santa Croce in Gerusalemme of Rome that had been built by St. Helena.
Since 1629 this relic is in St. Peter's, in a gold, cross-shaped case.
Fragments of the Holy Wood of Christ's Cross were preserved in St. Peter's up to the fifth century, in an oratory that was specially built by Pope Symmachus.

Their claim flies in the face of the view held by many modern historians who dismiss the very notion of any part of the Cross's survival as superstitious and fanciful.
However Thiede and d'Ancona have amassed evidence that this fragment is not only genuine, but that it was brought to Rome by Queen Helena, mother of Constantine the Great, who, according to legend, found the cross in Jerusalem in AD326 on the site where the Church of the Holy Sepulcre now stands.
Thiede and d'Ancona base their claim on the writing that survives on the Roman Titulus.

 Book Review
Carsten Peter Thiede lays out the setting for the New Testament documents and the life of Jesus.
The level of literacy, writing materials, methods of education and languages in regular use in 1st century Palestine are described in a lively and informative way.
Some readers may take exception to the way Thiede applies his imagination to fill in the gaps as to how and where and when the New Testament was written but his reconstructions are at least as plausible as any other speculative accounts.

Now readers have authoritative answers to these pivotal questions, in a book written by Thiede himself and by Times of London journalist Matthew d'Ancona, who originally broke the story to the public.
Indeed, the Magdalen Papyrus corroborates three traditions: Saint Matthew actually wrote the Gospel bearing his name; he wrote it within a generation of Jesus' death; and the Gospel stories about Jesus are true.

 Carsten Peter Thiede Message Board
Carsten seems to forget that the original team responsible for interpreting and studying the Dead Sea Scrolls was largely comprised of Catholic monks, Allegro was the only secular scholar that was ever allowed to look at them before their public dissemination some half-century after their original discovery.
That Carsten conveniently discovers this himself shows how specious and ad hoc the entire argument is to begin with.
Carsten should be more careful, this pseudo-scholarship and grasping at straws to maintain long-cherished religious dogma at the expense of legitimit scholarship is sickening and shows the extent to which the public at large is ignorant of science and the process of discovering natural explanations behind the most subtle and mysterious of nature's working.

Thiede and d'Ancona, who stirred up controversy about the dating of the Gospels in The Jesus Papyrus, challenge the prevailing scholarly opinion that the cross became a central symbol only after the emperor Constantine adopted Christianity as the official religion of the Roman Empire in the fourth century.
For example, they find the Chi-Rho symbol in papyri from the second century, and on a shard from Bethsaida from the first century.

That relic has long been lost as it was destroyed in the defeat of the Crusaders and retaking of the Holy Land by Muslim conquerors.
In recent years, Carsten Peter Thiede and Matthew d'Ancona have theorized in The Quest for the True Cross that we might still have a piece of that relic in part of the titulus (the inscription placed above Jesus' head on the cross) that had been taken to Rome.
In a fast paced and enjoyable read, the authors take us back through the annals of time to the period of the early Church when Constantine came to power and legalized the Christian religion.
