Puncak Jaya (IPA: 'pʊn.tʃæk 'dʒaɪ.ɔ), sometimes called Carstensz Pyramid, is the highest mountain on the island of New Guinea, on the greater Australian continent and in Oceania.
Puncak Jaya was originally called Carstensz Pyramid, after Dutch explorer Jan Carstensz who first sighted the glaciers on the peak of the mountain on a rare clear day in 1623 (Carstensz was ridiculed in Europe when he said he had seen snow near the equator).
Carstensz Pyramid is one of the more demanding of the two principal Seven Summits peak-bagging lists.

We now meet in Bali, fly direct to Timika, with helicopter support to the Zebra Wall area near base camp, or if the high altitude helicopter is not available we fly to Singha Village for the 4 to 5 day approach to base camp.
The climb is mostly scrambling, almost all on rock, with several 5th class sections up to 5.7 in difficulty, the upper part is exposed scrambling along a long ridge with a couple steep rock sections (depending on conditions at the time).

The Puncak Jaya massif has four separate glaciers, and it is possible to go skiing as high as Ngga Pulu (4.862m) at the head of the Meren glacier.

Only a few hundred people have climbed Carstensz due to the political instability and the fact that it is hidden in dense jungle.
Currently the Ilaga, Singa and mine routes are all closed due to the violence in the country; the only possibility for climbing Carstensz is to fly in and out the area by helicopter.
Water can be taken from the lakes and is quite clear, but filtering mostly is a good idea, as both climbers and porters often do not see the connection between peeing in a lake close by and the resulting illnesses...

Franky Kowaas, former guide and employee of Adventure Indonesia (the main expedition company that ran the Carstensz expeditions when the mountain was open.), believes he has a way to climb Carstensz legally run by his new company.
A brief background for those non-climbers out there or climbers who do not know the background of Carstensz: Carstensz was basically closed after some tourists got killed in the area.
After Carstensz was closed, a few expeditions were run apparently without legal permits.
