Cartagena, city, Colombia. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
Cartagena was founded in 1533 and became the treasure city of the Spanish Main, where precious stones and minerals from the New World awaited transshipment to Spain.
Although the harbor was guarded by 29 stone forts and the city was encircled by a high wall of coral, Cartagena suffered sackings and invasions—in 1544, 1560, and in 1586 (by Sir Francis Drake).
Known as the Republic of Cartagena, it was one of the bases used by Simón Bolívar to launch his campaign to liberate Venezuela.

Cartagena, Colombia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cartagena, Colombia, also known as Cartagena de Indias or La Heroica (The Heroic), is a large seaport on the north coast of Colombia.
During the 16th and 17th centuries, Cartagena was part of the Spanish Main, one of the chief ports of the Spanish treasure fleet and so a prime target for English and French pirate and privateers (such as Sir Francis Drake, who sacked the city in 1586).
Many of Cartagena's fortifications still stand: the Castle of San Felipe de Barajas, built between 1536 and 1657; the walls around the Old City (las Murallas); the undersea wall across Bocagrande built between 1771 and 1778; and the forts of San Jose and San Fernando, built between 1751 and 1759 at Bocachica.

 Shed a Tear for Cartagena (1 of 2) - Columbia - BootsnAll.com
Cartagena is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, far removed both physically and psychologically from the jungle and cocaine labs, but it has paid a steep price just for being part of a country that is now too dangerous for tourist travel.
The expense was justified militarily in 1741, when British Admiral Vernon ("Old Grog" himself), leading an enormous fleet and invasion force, was unable to capture the city after a siege lasting over half a year.
(This earned Cartagena the title of "The Heroic City".) Nothing could ever justify the human cost of building the defences, though: they were built by African slaves, who were simply worked to death, then dumped unceremoniously into the harbour.
