The Vatican Library manuscript collections as a whole are made up of a core collection, known as the "Vatican" collection (Vaticani latini, Vaticani greci, etc.), and various other collections named for their former owners or their places of origin.
When the term "Latin" is employed as part of a manuscript designation, the reference is to the characters in which an item is written rather to the language itself.
Researchers wishing to use the microfilms of Vatican Library manuscripts should first determine whether the manuscripts in which they are interested are present in the collection.

The illuminator, who was a specialist distinct from the scribe, had a repertoire of visual motifs which he or she employed to decorate the manuscript according to the nature of the text and the expense of the commission.
Illuminated manuscripts retain significance today not only for their great aesthetic appeal, but also for their depth as sophisticated cultural objects which may be appreciated in a great variety of ways.

The Carte d’Arborea, also called Carte di Logu, were said to have been written under the orders of Justice Eleonora d’Arborea, who would have regulated the use of communal lands and the appointments and functions of local authorities throughout the island.
