Carte de visite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The carte de visite ( CdV) is a type of photograph popular from the 1860s to the 1880s.
The carte de visite developed from the practice of using visiting cards as a means of communication.
Usually an albumen print, the carte de visite is a photograph 2.125 x 3.5 inches mounted on a card 2.5 x 4 inches.

A carte de visite is a small photograph, most commonly a portrait, mounted on a card measuring approximately 2 ½ x 4 inches.
Although its origins have been disputed, the name carte de visite, its format, and method for producing multiple images on a single glass plate were introduced by the Frenchman A. Disderi in 1854.
The strongest impetus to the carte?s rapid world- wide popularity was J. Mayall?s publication in August 1860 of the "Royal Album," a collection of carte de visite photographs of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and their children.

Brady--Brady   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
In 1857 in Paris, A. Disderi, court photographer to Emperor Napoleon III, introduced a new form of portrait photographs called cartes de visiteþsmall images (approximately 3 by 2 inches), the size of calling cards, for which they were named.
The true innovation came from Disderi's new camera, which used four lenses instead of one and produced a negative with four images on a single plate of glass.
Now photographers could easily produce portraits in great quantities, and cartes de visite rapidly became popular throughout Europe and America.

A Brief History of the Carte de Visite from The American Museum of Photography™
In addition, unlike earlier photographs made with such processes as the daguerreotype and ambrotype, cartes de visite could be sent through the mail without the need for a bulky case and fragile cover-glass.
Cartes were introduced in New York, probably by C. Fredericks, late in the summer of 1859.
But perhaps out of necessity (for example, a frontier photographer limited to a single camera), cartes de visite were also made of groups and landscapes and even as pioneering examples of photojournalism.

The carte de visite (or "CdV") is a standard 2 ¼" X 4" with an imprint or "backmark" bearing the name and location of the photographer.
They were a somewhat larger version of the carte de visite, usually 6 ½" X 4 ½" in size (larger cards were called "Boudoir cards" and even larger, more expensive ones were called "Imperials").
Like the carte de visite, it was a paper photograph mounted on a commercially-produced stiff card.

Now sometimes also referred to as CDVs, 300 to 400 million of the cartes were produced in England each year between 1861 and 1867.
As with school photographs, multiple CDV portraits were made at once and could be sent to friends, family, or a special someone.
And further distinguishing it from the ambrotype or the daguerreotype, the CDV image was also recorded on a negative, which could be used again and again to reproduce the image.

It is not clear however on what Disdéri’s patent was based, for central to the process must have been the camera, and the camera Disdéri first used was one invented by Antoine Claudet, and shown by him at the Great Exhibition in 1851.
It was in May 1859 that Napoleon III riding at the head of his troops, actually halted the French army en route to the war in Austria whilst he called at Disdéri’s Paris studio.
