CarterCopter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The CarterCopter is an advanced aircraft, a combined fixed wing aeroplane/autogyro currently under development by Carter Aviation Technologies.
The design has an gyroplane rotor mounted on top which is unpowered in flight, but it also has short fixed wings like a conventional aeroplane.
At present, the prototype's engine is normally aspirated, and hence is limited to just 320 hp (240 kW) and the fastest Carter Aviation Technologies prototype has achieved is about 173 mph (270 km/h); which is still ~40% faster than a conventional autogyro.

Carter's preliminary design for the PAV is similar to their current Carter-Copter prototype.
Carter's ultimate goal for their SR/C technology is to achieve speeds at tip ratios close to 5.0.
Carter estimates that a fast-build kit based on their PAV design with VTOL, a 1000-mile range, and speeds up to 200 mph would cost $55,000 (less engine and avionics) with as few as 1000 kits being manufactured per year.

 On The Fly...
Carter Aviation Technologies, of Wichita Falls, Texas, said yesterday they will not attempt to break the Mu-1 barrier for rotorcraft this November, as they had announced at Oshkosh.
Mu refers to the ratio of the aircraft's forward speed to the rotor's tip speed, which varies at a wider margin between the advancing and retreating blades as the vehicle's forward airspeed increases.
The challenge in achieving Mu-1, according to Carter Copter, is to maintain rotor stability...

The Carter Copter - The Next Big Thing
Jay Carter did some math and figured out a way to make an aircraft that wouldn't need long runways, but that would be fast and fuel efficient.
If the rotor were powered after leaving the ground, the aircraft would be a helicopter, and, as such, would need a tail rotor to keep it from spinning like a top.
Jay Carter and his group are kind of like them, but they have carbon fiber, Kevlar, personal computers, video cameras, and sensors to record the gory details of every flight.

Many light gyroplane rotors are made from aluminum, though GRP-based composite blades (Sport Copter, Averso, Revolution, RAF eg) and GRP-skinned blades are increasing in number.
Even aircraft-quality birch was specified in early Bensen designs, and a wood/steel composite is still used in the world speed record holding Wallis.

Carter Aviation Technologies is a research and development company, pioneering new aviation concepts.
Our primary focus is the slowed-rotor compound aircraft, a vertical takeoff and landing aircraft that uses the rotor for takeoff and landing, and a small, efficient wing for high speed flight, up to 500 mph, all with much less complexity than a tilt-rotor or other vectored thrust vehicle.

Carter Copter slow the rotor right down at high speed so the drag is then fairly tiny, and they have these stubby fixed wings they use that take over providing lift at those speeds, so the aerodynamic efficiency is much higher.
In contrast, aeroplanes end up with a lot more wing than they need at high speeds; they need a reasonable stall speed, so that determines how much wing.
Carter Copter doesn't use their fixed wing at stall, so the fixed wings are tiny.
