Carter Harrison, Jr. - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Educated in Saxe-Altenburg, Germany, Harrison returned to Chicago to help his brother run the Chicago Times, which their father bought in 1891.
However, Harrison was seen as more of a reformer than his father, which helped him garner the middle class votes his father had lacked.
One of Harrison's biggest enemies was Charles Yerkes, whose plans to monopolize Chicago's streetcar lines were vigorously attacked by the mayor.

Chicago ''L''.org: Historic Figures - Charles Tyson Yerkes
Mayor Carter Harrison wrote of Yerkes, "Trained in the public utility school he saw a roseate future ahead for the man who would apply eastern methods of official corruption to the crude halfway measures so far practiced by the novices in Chicago's best financial circles." The feeling was mutual.
Although utilizing Market Street and extending the Market stub track of the Lake Street Elevated was considered, Yerkes instead decided to "kill two bird with one stone." He used a similar tactic here as he had for the north leg: he obtained the franchise in the name of his planned, but as-yet-unbuilt Northwestern Elevated Railroad.
First considered was Harrison Street, but in late October, the Metropolitan West Side Elevated declared that this alignment was unacceptable, as it would subject its riders to a lengthy delay and detour.

It bears emphasis that each of these men could claim to be quite cosmopolitan on the basis either of his knowledge of foreign languages or his travels (Harrison pere having visited both Moscow and Osaka).
