Immediately after Cherokee Removal in 1838-39, Cartersville was settled in anticipation of the construction of the Western and Atlantic Railroad (WandA) through the Etowah Valley.
Cartersville saw only one minor skirmish during the Civil War, on May 20, 1864, when Confederate troops under the command of General Joseph E. Johnston occupied the depot, holding Union forces at bay while fellow Confederates escaped south across the Etowah River.
Cartersville also serves as the corporate headquarters for Phoenix Air, an international air charter company operating out of Cartersville Airport, and Midway Phoenix Corporation, managers of Midway Island, a key post in the Pacific theater of World War II and now a National Wildlife Refuge.

The Georgia Assembly then authorized the formation of a 60-man force called the Georgia Guard for the purpose of protecting the mines, but it was no more successful than previous efforts had been.
When, in the case of Worchester vs. Georgia, the U.S. Supreme Court decided in favor of "The Cherokee Nation...a distinct community, occupying its own territory" against Georgia, the Cherokees assumed that first that their homeland was safe.
However, when Georgia refused to obey the court's ruling and Jackson refused to intervene, the state ended up with a free hand in what was now solidly its northern territory.
