As we walked into the Recreation Ground in Carterton to assemble for the peace march, I was handed a five-page list of conditions by a policeman.
I have no idea what intimidating behaviour the residents of Carterton were expecting that day, but what they saw as the march left the Recreation Ground and turned onto Alverston Road certainly wasn’t the rampaging mob of thugs and vandals that might be implied from the police conditions.
The feeling amongst the marchers and peace campers as the locals were drifting back into Carterton was one of annoyance at the last-minute and excessive restrictions imposed by the police, but also a sense of achievement which could not be damped by the light rain which had been falling on us all day.

Carterton W.I. supported us by holding a coffee morning which was enjoyed by walkers and members of the public alike and the funds raised were donated to the Tsunami tragedy.
Many of Carterton's mature trees were planted at the same time and are of the same variety.
From what I have heard, from Carterton people, they are not the proudest people in the country when it comes to what they have but they are proud of their trees and all the beauty that surrounds them.

Carterton as a village came into being on 14th April 1900 by virtue of a purchase of land by Mr William Carter of the Rock Farm from Mr Thomas Arkle.
In 1906 this field was given, by Mr Carter, to the residents of Carterton as an `open space to be preserved for the enjoyment of the public forever'.
On the l September 1906 this land was conveyed to 12 men of Carterton as Trustees, these men being pioneers of the place, who accepted it in the name of the residents of Carterton to be used as a recreation ground and park land.
