In 1841, Jasper County, Missouri, was formed from Greene County and in 1842, Carthage was laid out as the county seat with a public square surrounding a simple frame courthouse.

Carthage was a planned city that came into being in 1842 when its site was selected by three men from Newton County as the permanent home for the seat of government of the newly formed Jasper County.
