Located in Kenosha, Wisconsin midway between Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the campus is on the shore of Lake Michigan and is home to 2,063 full-time and 750 part-time students.
German Lutherans founded Carthage in 1847 in Hillsboro, Illinois as The Literary and Theological Institute of the Lutheran Church of the Far West.
Carthage's Board of Trustees adopted a formal policy that explains the background of the name and the procedures the college will follow in deciding whether or not to change it.

On February 13, 1833, the General Assembly commissioned William Gilham, Scott Riggs and John Hardin to establish a permanent county seat, which was named Carthage and was incorporated in 1837.
Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon Church, and his brother Hyrum were shot to death in the Old Carthage Jail on June 27, 1844.
Joseph had chosen Nauvoo as headquarters for the Church in 1839, and by 1844 Hancock County was a Mormon Center.

I was born on December 27, 1903 in Carthage, Illinois.
Carthage is situated about fifteen miles east of the Mississippi River, opposite the boundary between Iowa and Missouri, in Handcock County, and is the county seat.
Carthage is an Infamous town where the local company of militia (equivalent to today's national guard), which was appointed by Governor Ford to protect the Mormon Prophet Joseph Smith, removed part of their uniforms and formed a mob to shoot Joseph and his brother Hyrum where they were held in the city jail.

She was Department Chair and Professor of Botany in the Biology Department at Carthage College from 1920 to 1956.

On the same day they were arrested on a charge of "treason against the State of Illinois." On this charge and against the protest of their counsel, they were committed to jail, without examination; where they met their tragic death.
It has been said that this company had already been guilty of mutiny and had been ordered to be arrested, whilst in the encampment at Carthage; and that they and their officers were the deadly enemies of the prisoners.
Besides all this the officers and most of the men resided in Carthage, in the near vicinity of Nauvoo; and, as I thought, must know that they would make themselves and their property convenient and conspicuous marks of Mormon vengeance in case they were guilty of treachery.

The old jail in the town of Carthage, Illinois, seat of Hancock County, was the site of the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith on June 27, 1844, by a mob of approximately 150 men.
Like other county jails in Illinois, Carthage Jail was built to incarcerate petty thieves and debtors and to serve as a temporary holding place for violent criminals.
It housed a debtor's room in the northwest corner of the first floor, and a dungeon, or "criminal cell" on the second floor, north side.

At the Carthage Jail on June 27, 1844, a mob murdered the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum, who thus sealed their testimonies of Jesus Christ with their blood.
Several days earlier, the Prophet and others voluntarily went to Carthage, the county seat located about 20 miles southeast of Nauvoo, to answer charges of civil disturbance.
Joseph and Hyrum were held in Carthage Jail pending trial and were guaranteed protection from mob violence by the governor of Illinois.
