  Cartridge Case Identification- FirearmsID.com
Cartridge cases like those on the right are mostly made of brass but can also be made of other materials such as steel and plastic.
Cartridge cases come in a variety of finishes but all are made of a material that is softer than the materials found in a firearm.
Cartridge cases are compared to fired standards from a firearm using a comparison microscope as described on the bullet identification page.

 Cartridge Case
The case is the "bottle" that holds the bullet (the "cork" if you will) at the front, the powder inside that powers the bullet on its trip down the barrel, and the primer in its base that sparks the burning of the powder when it is dented by the firearm's firing pin.
Cases for use with Boxer primers have a single flash hole in the center of the primer pocket that allows the explosion of the primer to ignite the main powder charge.
Cartridge cases are simple, one-piece devices, but they do have recognizable "parts." At the very back of the case, surrounding the primer and providing a ledge for the gun's extractor, is the rim.

Case necks sometimes need to be annealed again, to extend their useful life after a long succession of firings and resizings have work-hardened them.
Case necks, shoulders, and sometimes their upper bodies often have to be annealed before the case gets drastically modified.
Another drastic modification is re-forming the case body to smaller or larger diameters (swaging a case with a nearly cylindrical body, a shoulder, and a neck down to a long taper, for one example) or blowing a tapered case out to a nearly cylindrical shape.

Properties of cartridge cases & factors affecting the annealing process, how & why of brass annealing
Cartridge cases are manufactured to exacting standards and tolerances from brass made especially for the purpose.
Principally, the diameters of the case and the case's shoulder are restored.
The reason for the case neck splitting is that the necks have become to hard and are not able to take the expansion and contraction accompanying the rapid pressure excursion which occurs within the case when it is fired.

The cartridge case ejected will also have marks, which are caused by the firing pin, the breech face as the cartridge is repelled back in the breach by the force of rifling.
Often the cartridge case is the most important forensic specimen in the identification of weapons, as bullets are commonly deformed by the impact.
These cartridge cases are fired from firearms that are sent to the laboratory for investigation between 1990 and 1996.

Open case files refer to those cases in which an evidence cartridge case or bullet could not be linked to any firearms in the possession of law enforcement at the time of examination.
Cartridge casings from different manufacturers of ammunition may be marked differently by a single firearm such that they may not correlate favorably.
Cartridge cases that are not in rank one may not be detected as the database of similar handguns dramatically increased in size.

It is the cartridge case that has to hold the bullet in perfect alignment with the rifles bore, any deviation here and accuracy will suffer.
The cartridge case capacity is directly affected which is nothing more than the volume of the cartridge case but of which in turn affects velocity hi-lo spread and will affect bullet impact or accuracy.
All cartridge cases should be checked for this condition after every third loading because brass flows forward and will thicken the cartridge cases neck.

Tests have shown the internal capacity of the 55mm case and the 57 mm case are relatively the same...The 6.5X55 case is the exception to the standard case base size, the base of the 6.5X55mm case for example is.480, the case base in the 57mm case is.470 like the 30-06 class of cases.
The.308 and 307 cases are 51mm, the 30-40 Krag in strong rifles is near 58mm.

Cartridge (firearms) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A cartridge without a bullet is called a blank.
The original Eley-Boxer cartridge case was made of thin coiled brass - occasionally these cartridges could break apart and jam the breech with the unwound remains of the casing upon firing.
A blank is a charged cartridge that does not contain a projectile - the opening where the projectile would be held is crimped shut or sealed with some material that will disperse rapidly upon leaving the barrel, in order to contain the propellant.

 THE CARTRIDGE COLLECTOR
I had always assumed that the damage exhibited by cartridge cases such as these was caused at some point after they were discarded, either from having been stepped on by a person or a heavy hoofed animal, or from being run over by a vehicle or a piece of farm machinery.
This was accomplished by inserting a percussion cap in a hole punched in the base of the copper case, filling the case with fl powder, and inserting either a newly cast or a reclaimed bullet.
From 1876 through 1879, this area was a center for buffalo hunting, and she thought this cartridge case may have been used by one of those hunters.

The cartridge on the right, a.38-44 Smith and Wesson, has a folded head, constructed in the same manner as a rimfire case, but with the addition of a brass reinforcing cup.
Modern cartridge cases no longer have the balloon primer pocket with the open area around the primer pocket; instead they are cast with a thick head, into which the primer pocket and flash holes are drilled.

 Carcano Ammunition - Reloading
The type of primer used is dictated by the case, as the anvil is either incorporated in the case, for Berdan primers, or in the primer itself, for Boxer primers.
To resize cases, one would need a good set of resizing dies (these cost more than reloading dies) and, in the case of Swift cases, a means to recut the head (e.g., a lathe).
Although it is possible to cold form 7.35x51 Carcano cartridge cases from 6.5x52 Carcano cases using dies, the cold forming process work hardens the the neck area of the cartridge, which may result in premature failure of the cartridge.

The emphasis is now on matching the case to the chamber as closely as possible, while avoiding the excessive sizing that can lead to distortion, concentricity problems and work-hardened brass.
Brass cases of various makers exhibit different thicknesses even within the same lot, and typical over-the-counter sizing dies must resize minimum-thickness brass to firmly hold the bullet and to fit any chamber of any rifle.
In this case, the brass in the neck has been worked down only.014", and the use of an expander button that can create distortion and concentricity problems all of its own has been eliminated.

The Pixels Past Cartridge Housing is a reproduction of the original Atari 2600/7800 cartridge housing.
It was designed to allow homebrew authors to create their own video game cartridges without needing to to go through the arduous task of obtaining common 2600/7800 cartridges, stripping them of their labels, cleaning them, and disassembling them.
The prototype cartridge housing shown here was created with a stereolithography process (SLA), a common process to verify the functionality and form of a three-dimensional model.
