Topic: Carvacrol

Antimicrobial therapeutic compositions and method of use - Patent 6921539
The antimicrobial activities of each carvacrol and thymol are believed to be enhanced, while the pharmacological properties of procaine and related compounds are added to provide their unique properties to facilitate usefulness and effectiveness in humans.
The carvacrol was in the form of 96.44% pure essential oil of oregano and 27.43 g of this oil was used to provide the equimolar amount of carvacrol in the reaction.
The carvacrol was added into the procaine and the reaction vessels contents warmed in a water bath to 40° C. The contents were vigorously shaken for appropriate times, usually greater than 1 h, and the reaction allowed to slowly cool.

BioMed Central | Full text | Carvacrol and p-cymene inactivate Escherichia coliO157:H7 in apple juice
Carvacrol (2-methyl-5-(1-methylethyl)-phenol) is a major component of the essential oils of oregano and thyme [9,10].
The biocidal mode of action of carvacrol on bacteria is similar to that of other phenolic compounds and occurs via membrane damage resulting in an increase in membrane permeability to protons and potassium ions, depletion of the intracellular ATP pool and disruption of the proton-motive force [15,16].
Similarly, the concentrations of carvacrol and cinnamic acid required to delay spoilage of mango, kiwifruit and melon slices was >5 mM [21,22].

Idaho Observer: Oil of Oregano: An herb for all seasons
Carvacrol and thymol are the active ingredients giving the oil its reputable antiseptic properties.
However, it is the wild oregano, Origanum Vulgare, native to the south coast of Turkey and Greece on the Mediterranean Sea that is used for its miraculous medicinal properties, typically having combined carvacrol and thymol levels as high as 90 percent in some plants.
Steven Foster attributes the “fungicidal and worm-expellant properties” of oil of oregano to carvacrol and thymol.

Two types of experiments, one in test tubes and one on mice, have shown that oregano oil and a major component, carvacrol, appear to reduce infection as effectively as traditional antibiotics.
Harry G. Preuss and his research team, collaborating with Dr. Cass Ingram, of North American Herb and Spice, conducted research testing oregano oil on staphylococcus bacteria which is responsible for a variety of severe infections and is becoming increasingly resistant to many antibiotics.
The efficacy of oregano oil and one of its major components, a compound called carvarol, in 18 live mice infected with the staph bacteria showed that oregano oil was as effective as vancomycin and more effective than its constituent carvacrol in treating the staph infections.
