  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Wood-Carving
Such carving in low-relief, as shown on the only well-preserved chest of this era in the cathedral at Terracina in Italy, was common throughout the entire early medieval period.
The carved work was first covered with a coating of chalk, which was then painted with gay colours and richly gilded, and patterns or inscriptions were impressed upon the seams of the robes and nimbi.
Excellent carvings of this period in the Netherlands are the choir-stalls of the Great Church at Dordrecht which picture the entry of Charles V into the city.

Carving Knife - Glossary - Hormel Foods
Varying in flexibility, a carving knife may have a rigid blade that is used for slicing roasted meats; a more flexible blades for poultry; or a very flexible blade that is most often considered a blade for slicing smoked pork and fish.
The carving fork is designed to hold the meat steady while the food is being sliced, thus keeping the other hand safely away from the knife blade while cutting.
Carving forks typically have two long, sharpened curved prongs to easily be inserted into large cuts of meat while keeping the meat stable as it is sliced.

 Meat Carving
Carving is an art which in the past has been quasi-ceremonial and considered to be an integral part of the presentation of a meal.
Center the roast on a carving board that is long enough to allow the carver to cut the meat without spilling on the tablecloth, and small enough to avoid having the size of the carving board make the roast look small and insignificant.
A good carving board should have either a "well" to catch juices or it should be built on a slight slant with a lip so the juices will collect at the back of the board and not run off onto the table.

Carving of a chanter hole is done to achieve one of two results.
Increasing volume usually involves carving a series of notes in a band situation and is less typical for a solo piper.

Turkey Carving 101   (Site not responding. Last check: )
While a whole roasted turkey is an impressive sight, so is a well-arranged platter of sliced meat—and carving the bird before placing it on the table will make serving easier.
Before carving the turkey, let it stand at room temperature for 20 to 30 minutes to allow the juices to saturate the meat; then transfer the turkey from the roasting pan or presentation platter to a carving board (use layers of paper towels or two clean kitchen towels to protect your hands from the heat).
The best way to hold the turkey steady is to use your hand—a carving fork doesn’t provide the same grip and will pierce and tear the flesh.

 Carving Stone
Depending on the type of stone, the chips thrown during carving can be as sharp as glass shards.
Before you begin carving, look at the stone to determine the direction of the bed, or grain (similar to wood).
As in laying out a design for a wood carving, with stone you must also consider the direction of the grain to ensure the structural integrity of the parts of the carving.

The strange thing is that the box you shipped the carving in seems to be much bigger than the carving inside, which leads me to think that there has been some kind of shrinkage due to either the temperature changes or a combination of this and the type of week used.
