Henry Francis Cary (December 6, 1772 - August 14, 1844) was an English author and translator.
Cary's Lives of the early French Poets, and Lives of English Poets (from Samuel Johnson to Henry Kirke White), intended as a continuation of Johnson's Lives of the Poets, were published in a collected form in 1846.
A memoir was published by his son, Henry Cary, in 1847.

Cary's concept of the sublime is clearly a lay rather than a Christian one: the failure of language does not refer to the Godhead, but to the human play of emotions (the Aristotelian notions of "pity and fear").
Cary did not invent the title but found it in one of the manuscripts of the poem: the Italian tradition, however, settled on the present title "Divine Comedy" since the Venice edition of 1555 edited by Ludovico Dolce.

 The Inferno: Introduction
The unfortunate issue of Henry's attempt in Italy and the repulse which he met at Florence, together with his death, in 1313, deprived Dante of all hopes of re-establishment.
This translation of Dante's Inferno is presented exactly as it was published circa 1887 by Henry Altemus Publishing (now believed to be defunct).
He roved about Italy, a lonely exile, and finally found a welcome at Ravenna, where he was kindly received by Guido Novella da Polenta, the lord of that place, who was a liberal patron of letters.
