AugustaGolf.com: Sports Illustrated Masters recap: 1955
Cary Middlecoff's eagle, because of how and when it happened and the further fact that he went on to win this Masters Tournament, will undoubtedly be referred to time and time again as long as the game is played.
Middlecoff entered the final round with his lead of four strokes over Hogan still intact, and you can use a lead of that size when Ben is stalking you.
Cary was chattering nervously as he played, but he was hitting the ball hard, not taking too long over his shots, and all in all playing very efficiently until he came to the 5th, one under par.

Augusta Georgia: sports@ugusta: Cary Middlecoff, Masters winner, dead at 77 09/02/98
Middlecoff considered his 1956 U.S. Open title at Rochester, N.Y., as ``probably my greatest accomplishment in golf.'' But, he had no greater appreciation for a site than Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Masters, where he also was a two-time runner-up.
Born in Halls, Middlecoff attended high school at Memphis Central and Christian Brothers and was an all-America golfer at the University of Mississippi.
Inducted in 1992, Middlecoff is a charter member of the Tennessee Golf Hall of Fame.

Nevertheless, Cary felt that it was almost time to rehearse his presentation ceremony speech when he finished the front side in 34 strokes.
There Middlecoff hit his second shot into a trap, was still in the same trap after his third stroke, and finally came out of it with an extremely hard 6.
Middlecoff, 34 years old, has been playing in the Masters annually since 1946 when he was invited under a special provision that permitted bids to four outstanding golfers who had been inactive because of duty in the armed forces.

Middlecoff's anxiety persisted to the end
Two things stand out about Middlecoff's second round, which essentially won him the tournament: He made four straight birdies on the front nine to cap a then-record score of 31, and he made an eagle putt in excess of 80 feet on the 13th hole.
Middlecoff was hard-pressed to match his torrid start, and he had parred the first three holes of the back nine.
Middlecoff played the final five holes in even-par fashion, and his 137 total put him four shots ahead of Hogan.

By 1955 Middlecoff, “a happy refugee from subgingival curettage” in the memorable words of the immortal Herbert Warren Wind, was a contender to be reckoned with—never mind that he was considered mercurial, even skittish.
Middlecoff, at 6 feet 2 inches, was a particularly tall golfer for his era, and with a compact swing he produced great power; though lean, he was considered the John Daly of his day.
If Middlecoff was arguably the player of the ’50s, his career was, essentially, limited to that decade: a chronic back ailment forced his retirement as a touring pro in the early ’60s.

AugustaGolf.com: Sports Illustrated Masters recap: 1956
On the 5th and 7th holes, Middlecoff had suffered two inexplicable lapses, four-putting the 5th for a double-bogey 6 and picking up another double bogey on the 7th when he fluffed a comparatively simple little pitch into the trap he was attempting to pitch over.
Cary birdied the 11th and matched Venturi's birdie on the 13th, which compensated to a degree for the three stokes he lost to par on the 10th, 12th and 14th.
While everyone was shuttling between Middlecoff and Venturi and working out arithmetical tables that would have done credit to Einstein, Jack Burke, the invisible man in between, quietly made up stroke after stroke, nine strokes in all, on the leader.

AugustaGolf.com: Sports Illustrated Masters recap: 1959
Middlecoff, recovering neatly for his 3 on the 12th, has par in for 287.
That first year a fairly large number of name-players, among them Hogan and Middlecoff, failed to survive the cutoff, and quite a hue and cry was raised both by the competing field and the spectators.
Last year hardly any of the stars of the first magnitude were eliminated by the cutoff figure of 149, and, largely because of this, the controversy over the wisdom of reducing the field abated to mild and glancing opinions.
