Caryatis - Creedopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
In pre-classical (The mythology of the ancient Greeks) Greek mythology, Caryatis was the (A female deity) goddess of the (Any of various trees of the genus Juglans) walnut (A tall perennial woody plant having a main trunk and branches forming a distinct elevated crown; includes both gymnosperms and angiosperms) tree.
Caryatis Manouren is a double homage, first to caryatids, those eternal female figures in Greek architecture who silently and gracefully supported temples atop their heads through the ages.
It is more likely that the word is derived from the cult of Artemis Caryatis – & of the walnut tree’ - and that the earliest caryatids represented the young girls who danced for this goddess at her annual festival in Sparta.

There are other women in the sources called Caryatids, but these are the dancers from the sanctuary of Artemis Caryatis in the town of Caryae, and the two types of figures must not be confused.
It is axiomatic to refer to all female figured supports of the South Porch of the Erechtheion in Athens as Caryatids.
