The house is constructed of undressed stone, rough red bricks, and colored ceramic tiles in checkerboard and floral patterns.
Manuel Vicens was the owner of a brick and tile factory so the ceramic tiles pay tribute to his employment.

This is the detached residencial building commissioned by Manuel Vicens in the city of Gràcia, which became a part of Barcelona in 1897.
Built as a summer residence, Casa Vicens has a structure with four levels (basement, ground floor, and two other floors) and has everything necessary for comfort in the summer, such as good interior ventilation and a large garden.
Casa Vicens continues to be a private residence, and has been conserved relatively intact, although the garden, which originally included an artificial waterfall and the popular fountain dedicated to Saint Rita, has been partially mutilated to make room for new buildings.

One would hardly notice Casa Calvet as a Gaudi work as it is very reserved compared to his other works, but there is still some flourish of ironwork on it.
The wavy facade of Casa Mila is accented by wrought iron balconies.
The palm frond motif from the fence at Casa Vicens appears again on the main gate of Parc Guell and as a fence surrounding the school that is on the park grounds.

Casa Vicens was the first important building by Gaudi.
In 2004 it is 100 years ago thet Gaudi started the rebuilding of Casa Battlo and although the entrance fee is high (€ 16) we think a visit is really worthwhile.

Casa Batlló has an interesting façade, but the inside is also worth a visit.
Casa Vicens looks a bit different than the other Casas, and unfortunately the inside is not open to visitors, but you can spent some time just looking at all the details of the outside alone.
La Pedresa (Casa Mila) is on Passig de Gracia which is a hive of modernist architecture including Gaudi’s Casa Batillio which recently been added to the UNESCO site and to my eye it has the most impressive façade.

This theater is still used today for around 100 concert performances each year We dropped in to Casa Calvet to see the beautiful wood work designed by Gaudi - the lower floor was once offices, has been preserved and is now used for dining areas.

Mila House, popularly called "La Pedrera" looks like a mass of undulating stone where architecture turns into sculpture and where the original roof and chimneys, abstract and anachronistic, are especially eye-catching.
Both structures in stone and iron minimize traditional straight lines and flat surfaces by the use of rounded, irregularly spaced openings and a roof of balconies that have a wavelike appearance.
