		Casablanca is a 1942 romantic film set during World War II in the Vichy-controlled Moroccan city of Casablanca.
		The film was directed by Michael Curtiz, and stars Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine and Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa Lund.
		Dark film noir and expressionist lighting is used in several scenes, particularly towards the end of the picture.

		What works about Casablanca is its feeling of scope and its importance not only to the history of film, but to world history--a line referring to everyone being asleep all over America is poignant because at the time of its writing, the United States had yet to enter the war.
		The mystique is bigger than the film, in other words: the intervening decades and tons of fawning scholarship have combined to craft an idol of something that, viewed with an un-jaundiced eye, seems less than completely involving.
		That being said, Ebert's Casablanca commentary is less incisive than the work he did for Kane, and either recording falls short of his exceptional yakker for the DVD of Alex Proyas' Dark City.

		The final line of the film was written by the producer Hal Wallis after shooting had been completed, and film critic Roger Ebert calls Wallis the "key creative force" for his attention to the details of production (down to insisting on a real parrot in the Blue Parrot bar).

		The film is a cleverly woven, non-stop collage of humor, drama, and intrigue and tells one of the most memorable love stories ever put on film.

		The film ends as it should, but I don't think anyone would consider it a happy ending...unless you were Victor Lazlo.
		This was a film made at the height of WWII and one of it's many purposes was to stress self-sacrifice for a good cause.
		This is a film where men are men, women are gorgeous and strong, and the bad guys aren't always what they seem.

		Thought by many to be the best film or at least the most popular film of all time it is indeed a wonderful movie replete with danger, intrigue and romance.
		As the film was not due for release until spring, studio executives suggested it be changed to incorporate the invasion.

		Casablanca is on the Western edge of Morocco and was selected as the site where refugee's assembled to wait for valuable "Letters of Transit" to America in an effort to escape the clutches of the Nazi's.
		In fact, the film's sequence where the Nazi's begin to sing their national anthem while the freedom seekers enlisted by Victor Laszlolo to sing Le Marseilles ("Viva La France"!) had Burnett literally in tears as he was writing this scene.
		This was a film produced in "real time" and the ending required Bogart and Claude Rains to come back to an "Airport Hangar" set one month after filming wrapped (or so they thought).

		One of Hollywood's greatest acts of alchemy saw a classic romantic thriller created from unprepossessing raw materials: a modest play with a questionable grasp of historical facts, a director with a poor command of English, and a confused cast that was due, at one stage, to be headed by Ronald Reagan and Ann Sheridan.
		But it was the film that cemented Bogart's stardom with a role perfectly suited to his new sympathetic tough-guy persona.

		Bogart plays Rick Blaine, the cynical club owner in Casablanca who experiences the unthinkable when the only woman he ever loved (the beautiful Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa) comes back into his life, though not in the manner he had hopes; she is married to Victor Laszlo, a resistance fighter against Hitler's Third Reich.
