"Casablanca" is very romantic, the dialogue is very peppy and clever, and Bogart is the consummate leading man: tough on the outside, but soft on the inside.
The Germans in "Casablanca" are obviously written without hindsight as to the true nature of Nazi Germany.
The Germans obviously control Casablanca, and all it would take is a phone call to the airport to order the planes not to accept any "letters of transit" with Laszlo's name on it.

The events of Casablanca occur entirely within the confines of the colorful city of the title, well with the exception of a quick flash back around the halfway mark, and centers around a glitzy casino known as Ricks Place.
To explain why Casablanca works as well as it does will take a while though, it's not the kind of thing that can be adequately covered in a few short paragraphs because the film is such a pure marvel, a film that sees every one of its technical areas coming together in sheer perfection.
Yet I cannot, with a clear conscience, imply that Casablanca is merely another one of histories romantic comedies, because as good as it works in that area, Casablanca is so much more memorable than that.

It's hard to believe that when Casablanca was filmed at Warner Bros. Studios in 1942 it was "just another" of the 50 or so films that the studio was producing every year, as Lauren Bacall points out in the documentary about the film included in the special features.
Called "America's most popular and beloved movie- and rightly so" by The Motion Picture Guide, and "The best Hollywood movie of all time" by Leonard Maltin, Casablanca was voted the #2 film in a list of the top 100 films of this century by the American Film Institute.
Eventhough Humphrey Bogart was a major movie star, his voice and mannerisms were so distinct that it always seemed like he was just playing the same one- dimensional character in every film.

Briefly stated, the Marx Brothers decided to make at least one more movie after their MGM career ended with "The Big Store." It was a fortunate decision, and the result is a fast-paced spoof of the classic "Casablanca." Regardless of advancing age, Groucho, Chico, and Harpo are delightful to watch.
While "A Night in Casablanca" is not the Marx Bros. at their best, it still has enough chuckles and gags to amuse Groucho, Chico and Harpo's legion of fans.
While "A Night in Casablanca" is not a top-tier Marx movie, it will still provide you with a lot of amusement, and deserves a spot in your classic comedy DVD collection.
