Casalmaggiore is a lovely city nestled in the center of the musical triangle of Stradivarius, Verdi and Monteverdi.
The Oberlin in Casalmaggiore program, which attracted 88 students from 11 countries, takes place in magnificently restored 17th and 18th century buildings, including a classical Italian-style opera house, two concert halls, numerous practice and teaching studios and modernized living quarters.
Poe must have had Casalmaggiore in mind when he wrote of the 'tinntinnabulation of the bells, bells, bells, bells.' They sounded every day, through every concert, and are inextricably woven into the Casalmaggiore experience.

 zuccariENG
Carlo Zuccari was born in Casalmaggiore, a prosperous small town in the province of Cremona on 10 November 1704 to Domenico and Maddalena Gazzi.
In that same year in appeared in the guise of first violinist with the orchestra of Sammartini, in the concerts which were held in Cremona and Pavia on the occasion of the celebrations honouring Archduke Leopold of Austria; here he met Luigi Boccherini, who was also in the orchestra as first cellist.
In 1778 he retired from the musical life of Milan and returned to his native peaceful Casalmaggiore, with his wife and five children; but his indefatigable character meant that he spent his time teaching again and also with his beloved scientific studies into harmony and acoustics.

ndrea Teodoro Zani was born on 11 November 1696 to Francesco and Lucia Ferrari in Casalmaggiore, a flourishing small town on the river Po, in the province of Cremona.
Zani may well during these years have gone to the great important cultural centre of Paris; the publication of some of his work and the presence of many of his manuscripts in the libraries of the capital are perhaps an indication of time spent on French soil.
He died in Casalmaggiore on 28 September 1757, as Romani states, after the carriage in which he was travelling on the road to Mantua, where he was headed on "family business", overturned.

The first known documents mentioning Casalmaggiore date back to around the year one thousand, when the town was ruled by the Este family, and the oldest part of the town – dubbed Castelvecchio – was surrounded by walls.
After two centuries of mainly Cremonese influence, and brief interludes of Gonzaga rule in the 14th century, there came a long period commencing in the 15th century during which the town was ruled alternately by the Republic of Venice and the Duchy of Milan.

I soon came to the conclusion that Italy would not be free when the Austrians had been driven away, for that another and a more formidable foe—an enemy to society and comfort, to men and horses, to mankind in general would have still to be beaten, expelled, annihilated, in the shape of the carrettiere.
Surely the cholera is not the only pestilence a country may be visited with; and, should Cialdini ever go to Vienna, he might revenge Novara and the Spielberg by taking with him the carrettieri of the whole army.
At last Casalmaggiore hove in sight, and, when good fortune and the carmen permitted, I reached it.

 Pallas Athene by PARMIGIANINO
He also worked in Rome (1524—27), where he painted The Vision of Saint Jerome (London, National Gallery), and at the end of his life in Casalmaggiore, where he was exiled for failing to complete the decorations in Santa Maria della Stec- cata begun in 1534.
Pallas Athene would appear to be a late work and is comparable in style with Parmigianino's last altarpiece, The Virgin and Child with Saint Stephen and Saint John the Baptist (Dresden, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen), painted for the church of San Stefano in Casalmaggiore in 1539-40.
The gracefulness of the style evolved for the so-called 'Madonna with the Long Neck' of around 1535 (Florence, Uffizi) gives way to a greater sense of gravity in these late works, characterised by slower, more ponderous rhythms and simpler compositions.
