 DVD Times - Fellini's Casanova
Casanova however is a bit of a mess as a film and Fellini’s dislike for his subject is quite evident.
Film music composer Alexandre Desplat is called upon once again, as in the extra features of the French edition of Amarcord, to talk about Nino Rota’s music for the film, which he regards along with Amarcord as among the composer’s best work for Fellini and a personal influence on his own work.
Those films are of interest therefore for the particular Fellini-esque slant he applies to them, but they never make the full connection that would make Fellini’s Roma such a delight, and his lack of interest in those aspects that could not be filtered through his own ego is evident particularly in Casanova.

Casanova is a throwback to such artifacts as William Dieterle's Madame DuBarry and Gregory La Cava's The Affairs of Cellini -- 1930s films that took historical characters and put them in stories that bore more resemblance to bedroom farces than history.
By the end of the film, Casanova (Heath Ledger) has passed himself off as at least four people he isn't; Francesca (Miller), who leads a double life to begin with, has disguised herself in drag three times; and so on.
Heath Ledger is a perfect Casanova, bringing to the character just the right mix of carnality, amused cynicism ("Well, she's hardly a novice," he mutters when accused of debauching a nun in training), indolence (he's forever broke and dodging creditors), and genuine romance.

 BBC - Movies - review - Casanova
In this new take on the legend of Casanova, director Lasse Hallström turns the 18th-century bed-hopper into a sensitive New Age man. Heath Ledger puts on the powdered wig and wink-wink demeanour and promptly falls in love with a flame-haired feminist played by Sienna Miller.
However, the sad truth is, the Aussie star generated more electricity with Jake Gyllenhaal, in Brokeback Mountain and Hallström pulls the plug completely with a tentative approach that wavers uneasily between slapstick and sentimental.
Casanova is unaware of her extracurricular activities (and she of his) so all that draws him to her is the fact that she rejects his advances.

Aside from having little to say, the new edition of "Casanova" _ directed by Lasse Hallstrom of "Chocolat" fame _ tries so hard to serve a crowd-pleasing buffet that it turns into a scattershot series of unrewarding nibbles.
To answer, the movie resorts to limp dime-store psychology, telling us that Casanova is less a fiendish lothario than an emotionally wounded little boy who's trying to find the love he lost when his mommy abandoned him for a career as an actress.
Ledger's Casanova might be able to seduce an entire convent (as he does in an early scene), but the movie that bears his name may have more difficulty charming audiences.

Indeed, the way the film describes the group seems a perfect dramatization of Georg Simmel’s sociology: society (the orchestra) is a crystallization of the individual interactions (musicians and their instruments).
In a sense, his films, especially the one under consideration here, are Society rehearsals, readying individual members of the audience to conduct themselves and be conducted more wisely in a restricted if not repressive world.

I have to admit, I have labeled a few commentary tracks self-important, most recently Lasse Hallström’s last film, “An Unfinished Life.” It turns out that Hallström is one of the most self-important directors to ever cut a commentary tack (not the most self-important, as that would have to go to P.T. Anderson).
