Case modding or Case modification is the modification of a computer chassis (often just referred to as the case).

Just a few short years ago, case modding was simply painting a case; now you can’t walk into a PC shop or go to an online store with out seeing some type of modding or cooling items.
Modding is so main stream now that the “Dude that got a Dell” regardless of how nice, is somewhat embarrassed to carry it into the LAN party.
One look at any case mod gallery like GruntvillE’s or our friends over at coolcasegallery.net that we’re also proud to announce were mentioned in the article and it’s easy to see why the poor guy that just dropped a few grand on a system is embarrassed.

Case modding I suppose could be constituted as "Ricing" out your PC.
For example, on this case, if we went too far we would ruin the door since it has a sort of boxed in channel for hooks to sink into, it also would have caused problems when we installed the plexiglass, leaving too little room to work with and glue down.
When I cut the window in my personal case a few years ago I used close to the same stuff, except it was a wrap around kind, so it was the same thickness on the inside of the case and on the outside.

Surfing through case mod sites, the most popular mod you see (besides Lexan windows) is some form of whizzy cooling device, be it fan or waterblock.
This was as much an art project as it was a case mod -- I intended it to be indicative of the work I do, the things I see and work with every day, and also put an interesting spin on a common concern in the hardcore PC user community.
However, when you are building a computer case from scratch in your lunch hours and idle periods at work without the correct tools or the benefit of power tools other than a cordless drill, you've got to cut corners somewhere or you'll never finish.

Summary: Computer case modding has became so popular that it has featured in the world's largest newspapers, captivated many users worldwide, and changed the marketing strategy direction of many mobo and graphics card manufacturers to please the growing enthusiast market.
It is obvious to most people that case modding is becoming a big thing as far as computer systems go these days, there are places all over the world that solely specialize in the modding of cases, as a business.
This was done by cutting holes for fans on the front, rear and top of your case, this in the end was drawing more air into your system hopefully resulting in the end a drop in temperature giving overclockers the chance to push their processors higher.

 Introduction to Case Modding -= www.bigbruin.com =-
The term "modding" may not even be a real word (I know MS Word's spell checker is upset with my use of it), but it is appropriate for loosely describing the broad field of modifying a computer system to give it a personalized style.
The old school case modders may be more likely to find their gear at hardware, automotive, and electronics stores than they would at a computer store.
They might take a plain case like this and turn it into something even more unique than this one, with just a bit of creativity and a steady hand.
