Topic: Casino Royale (1967 film)

  Teleport City
Casino Royale is as much a character study as it is a pulp action novel, and Bond is deeply flawed.
Casino Royale is a good book that, knowing what we know, becomes a phenomenal "origins" story, the foundation for a rich and complex world of double-cross, espionage, and beautiful but dangerous ladies.
The film, directed by several talents and starring a veritable who's who of popular actors from the time, is an unholy mess that has little to do with the original material (though Orson Welles appears as Le Chiffre and Ursula Andress shows up as Vesper Lynd), or with any other James Bond film.

Casino Royale - Through the Looking Glass
Casino Royale is thus a metafilm on the process of the "real" Bond cinema, which, beginning with Goldfinger and You Only Live Twice, updated and altered Fleming's original novels until only character names and vague plot directions were employed.
Instead, the film was stocked with in-stars, in-jokes, and an in-style that would surpass not only the grandeur of the original series and its penchant for outrageous cold-warrior escapades, but in turn, influence the megalomania of the "real" Bond series.
Although the film seems to yearn for the prototype's set pieces and its literate pop-apocalypse, it overkills with garish tones for fear that the concept might be lost on a market too young to remember or too attention deficient to understand.

Meanwhile, as a huge brawl breaks out in the casino involving secret agents, French police, stereotypical movie cowboys and Indians, George Raft, William Holden, and a seal with the name tag "James Bond 007", "The Detainer" tricks Jimmy into swallowing a miniature nuclear bomb, leading to an explosive finale in which Casino Royale is destroyed.
The film is notable for the legendary behind-the-scenes drama involving the filming of the Peter Sellers segments.
The framing device of the rest of the film with the David Niven character was invented to salvage the footage.

The 1967 film changed the name to Evelyn Tremble, making him an English expert on Baccarat who was recruited to by the BSS and was given the confusing code name of James Bond.
In the 1967 version of the film, the character is called Vesper Lynd, which is a borrowing from the Fleming novel Casino Royale.
In the 1967 film version, Vesper runs an international business and she is a former agent who is called upon to seduce Evelyn Tremble and convince him to work for the BSS.

The film’s producers couldn’t even keep Mata’s haircut straight; while she displayed long locks most of the time, she showed up for the movie’s climax with an ugly cropped ‘do that looks like Mia Farrow’s cut in Rosemary’s Baby.
Royale couldn’t quite decide if it wanted to embrace the Bond flick clichés or mock them, and the result appeared watchable but too erratic to be anything more than that.
Casino Royale appears in an aspect ratio of approximately 2.35:1 on this single-sided, dual-layered DVD; the image has been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.

The James Bond films are a ripe target for parody, but whilst Casino Royale manages to pull off some of the obvious jokes, it is far from satisfactory overall.
As a result, the film is totally directionless, a confused, disorganised mess, which many Bond enthusiasts are keen to forget.
If the whole film had been of a similar calibre, Casino Royale would probably be regarded as a classic, rather than a clumsy attempt to parody one of British cinema’s most popular film series.

The dialogue in one of the opening scenes, between 'M', his associates, and James Bond is funny and very well written; most of Woody Allen's material for his role as a Blofeld parody are hysterical, and the score to the film is catchy, silly, and fun.

With only the number of uncredited writers outweighing the number of directors, this film screams 'mishmash' and indeed, it transpires, that that's exactly what it is – a silly mess which amazingly manages to be less than the sum of its parts.
To waste any time here discussing the plot would be to give the film credit that it simply doesn't deserve – the makers owned the rights to the actual novel and could have made a 'real' film but instead the outcome is a film that is more like a load of poorly conceived individual scenes.
Overall this is a pretty awful film but I suppose you may get a few laughs out of it if you can buy into the silly tone but I'm afraid I wasn't even able to get close to the mind state needed to enjoy this.
