Casio CZ synthesizers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However the CZ line used phase distortion to somewhat simulate an analog filter, it had in total eight different waveforms: as well as the standard sawtooth, square, and pulse waveforms, it had a special double sine waveform, a half-sine waveform, and three waveforms with simulated filter resonance: resonant sawtooth, triangle, and trapezoidal waveforms.
The CZ synthesizers also had the ability to stack up two different sounds via the "tone mix" feature resulting in a functionally monophonic synthesizer; this was Casio's version of the "unison" feature other polyphonic synthesizers had.
The CZ synthesizers did not have some features that analog synthesizers had: it was not possible to modulate the DCW with a LFO; it was not possible to have pulse width modulation; the simulated resonance was an either-or proposition; with the exception of a resonant form, it did not have a triangle wave.

Phase distortion synthesis is a synthesis method introduced by casio in the 1980s in its cz range of synths, and similar to frequency modulation synthesis....
Each DCF (what Casio called the phase distortion part of the sound which determined how many harmonics a given sound had) was also modulated by a dedicated 8-stage envelope generator.
The CZ synthesizers did not have some features that analog synthesizers had: it was not possible to modulate the DCF with a LFO; it was not possible to have pulse width modulation; the simulated resonance was an either-or proposition; with the exception of a resonant form, EHandler: no quick summary.

Casio CZ-230S, phase distortion vs. FM   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Casio CZ synthesizers are considered "cult" and claimed by many people to have a very special and "analogue" timbre - and this despite they do physically not much more than ordinary digital FM synthesis, which was only well enshrouded to avoid legal patent trouble.
Casio instead added a way more sophisticated noise generator that can produce a lot of differently coloured noise timbres by modulating the pitch of a tonal sound with random numbers, which e.g.
Thus Casio attempted to enshroud the inner working of their PD by explaining the same physical phenomenon from a different view using the mathematical derivation of Yamaha's at that time patented FM formulas, despite both electrically do the same or at least very similar things.

All of the CZ synthesizers utilized Phase distortion to somewhat simulate an analog filter.
Unlike other synthesizers, where having multiple waveforms added the multiple waveforms together, the CZ synthesizers would play one waveform and then play the other waveform in series; this resulted in their being a fundamental added one octave below the pitch of the sound.
The Casio CZ-1 is the last synthesizer that Casio introduced in the CZ line.

On the CZ's there are eight, very basic waves to choose from, such as sine wave, sawtooth, square and pulsewave.
Programming the synthesizer is a very tedious process, due to the lack of data slider and the tiny non-lit data display.

It arrived at a time when no one made monophonic synthesizers anymore and the predominance of rubber in the design was different to say the least.
Shortly after Casio got into making "home" keyboards they progressed onto professional synthesizers with initially the CZ range which encompassed a variant of instruments that were all a small variation on the same design.
Yet another FM synthesizer from Yamaha, this one comes in a compact, multitimbral, 1-unit rack mount module and is basically a key-less version of the DX-11.

The reason I didn't give it four stars is that the chapter on multi-timbral operation is misleading, because the CZ series (except the CZ-1) have a frustratingly limited implimentation of this MIDI function.

Casio has been known for putting out cheap consumer products (at least in the synth market) but actually created a quality line of unique synthesizers with their CZ models.
Casio also pioneered phase distortion synthesis which is similar to FM-style digital synthesis but much easier to program and not as far removed from analog subtractive syntheses as pure FM, it can sound a lot like these new virtual analog synths that are coming out but at a fraction of the price.
