Pen Computing Magazine: Casio Cassiopeia E200
Casio, after all, had by far the largest and most varied lineup of Pocket PCs, ranging from the elegant EM-500, to the powerful and expandable flagship E-125--the handheld that defined the modern era multimedia PDA--to the EG-80 and 800 ruggedized models with snap-on batteries, and finally the IT-70 and 700 industrial Pocket PCs.
Casio also claims that the E-200 will be able to control such diverse devices as printers, projectors, CD-ROM drives, keyboards and mice.
This device is part of a new generation of Pocket PCs, a generation that for now uniformly marches to the beat of the Microsoft drummer.

 Casio Cassiopeia BE-300 Pocket Manager
When Casio announced that it intended to release a PDA called the Cassiopeia Pocket Manager BE-300 that would utilize its own user interface on top of Windows CE 3.0 rather than Pocket PC, the critics were undoubtedly curious and skeptical.
Casio has never been at the forefront of design, and this is reflected in the BE-300's buttons.
Casio should firmly position the BE-300 for the business market as it will likely have more success offering the device as a customized solution for vertical businesses than it will competing in the consumer market against the likes of Pocket PC and Palm.

Casio is aiming to split the difference with what it calls not a Pocket PC but a "Pocket Manager" -- and the lowest-priced color-screened, Web- and e-mail-capable PDA you can buy.
Casio's Web site, along with banners urging and offering incentives for software developers to support it, currently offers some two dozen programs for the BE-300, from a few desirable applications like Z4Soft's PTab spreadsheet ($30) and the PocketTV MPEG player ($10) to undistinguished games and to-do and birthday lists.
Casio sells a 56Kbps dial-up modem for $130 and Z-Com 802.11b wireless network adapter for $150, as well as a $160 adapter for PC Cards and $200 digital camera.

The Cassiopeia E-115 (AU$1,499 ERP) uses the same CPU, display, and case as the highly regarded E-100 and E-105 Palm-size PC models, which were the first to offer 64,000-colour displays and stereo audio output.
The Cassiopeia E-115 ships with a serial synchronisation cradle, an ac adaptor/battery charger, and a slipcase (which is recommended to protect the screen).
Instead, Casio is staking its success on the strength of the existing Cassiopeia design and the greatly improved Pocket pc operating system.

Considering that it was only fully released into the UK market about six months ago, this appears to be madness, but Casio still has stocks arriving so if you like what you see, call Casio now and order one while you can.
It doesn't have the streamlined elegance of the Compaq or the svelte lines of the Palm V. What the E-105 does have is all the most important features you need in a power palmtop: loads of memory (32Mb of RAM and 16Mb of ROM), a clear and colourful TFT screen, and nippy performance.
But what really makes the Casio a joy to use is how responsive it is. There's none of the sluggishness that plagues its Windows CE competitors, but near-instant loading of apps and well positioned buttons on the outside of the machine to make accessing the menus easy.

The E-200's screen is bright and easy to use in all lighting conditions (though it's a bit darker than earlier Cassiopeias), and you can swap out the rechargeable battery for a spare one (which costs $45); a backup battery will preserve your data if the main battery runs out.
Casio eliminated the voice recorder button that was on the side of previous Casio Pocket PC PDAs, and after trying out the E-200's audio, we're not surprised.

Casio does not typically worry about manufacturing bugs and defects like some of the other vendors, and I would expect that to apply to the BE-300.

The screen, lack of infrared, omission of internal speaker, all-plastic body, small amount of usable memory, 5 cent cradle, and others are all the result of needing to somehow trim the fat.
