Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Casper the Friendly Ghost
Casper was unusual among Famous Studios characters, in that he wasn't a knock-off of something else.
In 1949, Casper became a comic book character, when St. John Publishing secured the rights to do all of Paramount's cartoon characters in that venue — and by the way, it was in St. John's Casper the Friendly Ghost #1, September 1949, that Casper first received his actual name.
Casper's comics far outlasted his theatrical career — they were published regularly until 1982, and sporadically since.

Casper comics were published by St. John Publishing beginning in 1949, and later by Harvey Comics, which expanded the cast of characters to include Casper's three pointy-headed ectoplasmic uncles, Stinkie, Fatso and Stretch, and Wendy, the good little witch.

Specifically, Casper places this film in the context of the production history at MGM, enthusiastically wondering at and admiring that a movie of a supposed low-brow genre was made under the banner of Tinseltown's most prestigious studio.

Overall Casper is definitely the friendliest ghost to ever grace the screen and it is a film that is hard not to like.

Horner is a veteran of scoring children's films --live action and animation-- and in many ways, Casper is dismissed because it features many of the same motifs and orchestrations that we have heard so many times in previous Horner scores for the genre.
There are, however, some more serious interludes throughout the film when Casper wants to be a live, little boy again, and for these scenes, Horner cuts away from obnoxious action music and spills out one of the best themes of his entire career.
