The vegetation of the Caucasus is quite diverse, including broad-leaved and coniferous forests, subalpine and alpine meadows, montane steppes and woodlands, and semideserts, and depends on both the physical features discussed above and the evolutionary history of the flora.
There are two refugia of Tertiary flora in the region: the Colchis in the catchment basin of the Black Sea, and the Hyrcanian in the extreme southeastern end of the Caucasus on the Caspian Sea coast.
Reptile endemics are concentrated in the xeric portions of the hotspot.

The Caspian Hyrcanian Mixed Forests experience abundant rainfall and snowmelt that runs off the north slope of the Elburz and Talish mountains.
These lush forests sweep down to the coastal plain south of the Caspian Sea, where they eventully yield to coastal lagoons, swamps, and salt marshes.
Wetlands along the coast of the Caspian Sea provide wintering habitat and migration rest areas for birds that include Dalmatian pelicans, pygmy comorants, white-headed ducks, and imperial eagles.

Male Caucasian fl grouse can be seen in the early morning, alone or in small flocks, hopping and flapping their wings as part of a spring mating ritual.
