  General Lewis Cass in Bartow County History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Member of the Ohio Legislature and the US Senate, Cass served as Ohio's US Marshal, was governor of the Territory of Michigan, US Senator, Secretary of War and Minister to France under Andrew Jackson, and Secretary of State under Buchanan.
Cass served as a colonel in the Third Ohio Regiment during the War of 1812 and became a brigadier general in the US Army the next year.
Of the ten counties in the United States named for General Cass, Cass County, Georgia was the only one to change its name.

 WELCOME TO BARTOW COUNTY GEORGIA Genealogical Society Inc.
Cass County Georgia was created in 1832,from parts of Habersham and Hall Counties, at the time nine other counties were formed,being Cherokee, Cobb, Forsyth, Gilmer, Lumpkin, Murray, Paulding, Walker and Floyd.There were many inhabitants as early as 1800= The whites living amongst the Indians.
By an act of legislature in 1861, the name of the county was changed to Bartow, to honor Francis S. Bartow, born in Savannah in 1816, and died at Manassas, commanding the brigade consisting of the 7th, 8th, and 9th Georgia, and the 1st Kentucky Regiments.
WORKSHOP, The Bartow County Genealogical Society held a Family Research Workshop on Saturday March 12 at the Research Library, speakers, Mark Anthony, the President of the Rome Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution spoke on Findind your Ancestor for the Sons of the American revolution membership.

He moved to Pontotoc County, Mississippi with his brothers and uncle in the late 1860's, after his father's death in Cass County, Georgia.
Though the births of his children tell a different story as to when he was living in Georgia, I think he may have been living in Cass County earlier than 1850.
Allen's brother, Andrew had died in about 1856, probably in Georgia, but there is a filing of his estate in the Pontotoc County Probate Court, for the December term of 1857, it was finalized there in 1861.

Microfilm Shelf List INTRODUCTION Biographical Note George Scarborough Barnsley (1837-1918) of Woodlands Plantation, Cass County, Georgia, and Sao Paulo, Brazil, was the son of Godfrey Barnsley (1805-1873), a cotton exporter of Savannah and New Orleans, and Julia Scarborough Barnsley (1810-1845).
In 1866 letters referring to George's efforts to sell a cotton press while still in Georgia, an accident with the press in which he suffered a broken leg, and his disappointment in the event in which he was associated with his former school friend, F.W. Greene, are included.
Also included are a mortgage, dated 1861, on land in Cass County, where George Barnsley was indebted to A.C. Trimble, and miscellaneous receipts.
