The county was organized in 1835 as Van Buren County, renamed in 1848 after Michigan U.S. Senator and presidential candidate Lewis Cass.
In the county the population is spread out with 28.40% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 30.20% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 11.70% who are 65 years of age or older.

The Land Patents Project at the Missouri State Archives is an ongoing project to transcribe information from the state-issued land patents to create a database of patent information, useful in placing an individual in a specific location at a specific time.
The Missouri State Archives holds nearly 1½ million pages that document the service of Missourians in domestic and foreign wars between 1812 and World War I. These military records primarily consist of individual service cards, but the extensive collection also includes muster rolls, special orders, reports, and more.

 UED6018 Missouri Courthouses: Cass County, MU Extension
Although the clerk recorded specific instructions for building a courthouse in April 1837 and identified the superintendent, this order was rescinded at the May 1837 meeting, and the court appointed another superintendent, John Cook.
Soldiers quartered their horses in the courthouse during the war, and at the conclusion of hostilities, the court declared the building unfit for occupancy.
Root, an architect from Kansas City, drew the plans for Cass County's third courthouse, which was built in 1897 (see Figure 2).

This multi-jurisdictional coalition was organized to reduce traffic crashes within the county by performing various educational and enforcement efforts in hazardous moving violations, drinking and driving, and occupant restraint issues.
