Cassette Scandal - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
In September 2003, Ukrainian troops joined U.S.-lead stabilization forces in Iraq, which is widely perceived as Kuchma's effort to improve relations with the West.
Former Interior Minister Yuri Kravchenko, one of those recorded with Leonid Kuchma in the "cassette scandal", was also said to be under investigation.
The two police colonels accused of the killing have been detained and a third senior policeman, identified as CID commander Oleksiy Pukach, was being sought on an international arrest warrant.

Apparently unimpressed with the "cassette" scandal, the public did not take the chance of openly telling its servants that they were fired.
When, to crown it all, the "Kolchuga" scandal erupted, it became clear that Medvedchuk, efficient and helpful as he had proven to be, had to be supplemented with a prime minister of the "same style": tough, hardshell and unfalteringly determined in fulfilling the tasks set before him.
In fact, it was a logical sequel to the "cassette" scandal but it concurred in time with the protest actions.

Between 1998 and 2000 Mel'nychenko recorded numerous conversations that took place in the office of the Ukrainian leader before fleeing abroad with the secretly taped recordings.

Later, he joined President Leonid Kuchma's team of bodyguards and at the time of the scandal, Mel'nychenko held the rank of Major.

Since the “cassette scandal”, which the authorities declared “exhausted” a year ago, nothing has happened to match the current developments in these relations in terms of significance and emotion.
The “cassette scandal” revealed to the fullest possible extent the lack of the authorities’ will, preparedness and desire to engage in a meaningful dialogue with the opposition.
For example, in the time of the “cassette scandal” the authorities tried to neutralize the opposition by banning its marches in the centre of Kyiv arguing that they were concerned with the “preservation of the historical part of the city” and “environmental protection”.

However, I think the people who don't believe that the truth about the real causes and masterminds of the "cassette scandal" will ever be made public outnumber by far those who have abandoned hope of seeing the Gongadze's case properly investigated.
They don't think they will ever learn whether the scandal was connected with the case of the missing journalist and whether the head of the state or any other high officials, for that matter, were involved in it.
