Instead of rebuilding the medieval town, Marques de Pombal decided to demolish the remains of the earthquake and rebuild the down town in accordance with modern urban rules, in what would now probably be considered at least controversial.
Lisbon was the centre of a republican coup October 4-5,1910 and the Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974, which overthrew Antonio Salazar's successor Marcelo Caetano, the last prime-minister of the Portuguese Corporative Regime: the Estado Novo.

In those days the stream of pilgrims who came from the west to visit the Egyptian wilderness with its hermits and monks included many who may well be regarded as missionaries of Coptic religious culture, since they transplanted Coptic teachings to their native countries.
One of the most eminent of these was John Cassian (360-435 A.D.), a native of southern Gaul and the son of rich parents who gave him a good education.
It was on that occasion that John Cassian collected the material for his two famous works, the "Institutes" [41] and the "Conferences" [42].

To many local government officials — especially county clerks and town treasurers — issuing dog licenses is both a money loser and a nuisance, a nuisance some consider more annoying than an untagged and free-roaming canine.
In Wisconsin, by law, the county clerk is responsible for distributing dog licenses to town treasurers, who must issue the tags to residents.
According to the Dog Federation of Wisconsin, the opposition stemmed not from any problem with having veterinarians sell the licenses but from a provision that required the county dog listing to be furnished to the veterinarians.

A Comparative Study of the Ascetic Ideal
Pachomius' monastery had a huge impact within Egypt and throughout the Empire, for daughter monasteries were established throughout that province and abroad even before his death in 347 A.D. Within decades of Pachomius' establishment of his community at Tabennisi, the ideal of communal monasticism had rapidly spread from Egypt into Palestine, Syria and Asia Minor.
Basil and Cassian, each beginning their lives as monastics, were greatly influenced by the coenobitic ideal, and exported it to the province of Gaul in the mid-fourth century, where it was to flourish and become one of the few stable institutions in Western Europe throughout the early Middle Ages.
John Cassian summarized the spiritual teachings which he had received in Egypt, in two books, The Conferences and The Institutes, adapting it to the somewhat different conditions of the West.
