It is the largest urban area on Vancouver Island (not to be confused with the city of Vancouver, which lies 90 minutes northeast by ferry on the British Columbia mainland).
With the discovery of gold on the British Columbia mainland in 1858, Victoria became the port, supply base, and outfitting centre for miners on their way to the Cariboo gold fields.
In 1886, with the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway terminus on Burrard Inlet, Victoria's position as the commercial centre of British Columbia was irrevocably lost to the City of Vancouver.

Vancouver, BC, Jul. 20 (UPI) -- The second strong earthquake within four days has been reported along the southern coast of British Columbia, registering 6.1 on the Richter scale.
The quake's epicenter was located just off the west coast of Vancouver Island in Nootka Sound, the same spot where a 5.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded Thursday, the Globe and Mail reported.
Seismologist John Cassidy said the earthquake was felt as far away as Vancouver, but no major damage was reported.
