Amazon.com: Preacher Vol. 1: Gone to Texas: Books: Garth Ennis
Gone to Texas is the beginning of the Preacher saga, which involves the title character, whose church went up in flames while the whole town was inside; his ex-girlfriend Tulip, whom he ran out on five years ago for reasons we don't know; and Cassidy, a drifter who rescued Tulip from a bad situation.
It's the first chapter in the 9 volume series that follows Jesse Custer, a former preacher who has lost his faith, Tulip, Jesse's gun-weilding girlfreind, and Cassidy, an Irish vampire, on their journey to find God, literally.
Preacher is funny in disturbing ways, it's humor that will make you realize your mind is pretty messed up for laughing at this stuff, dark humor at its best.

Preacher (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Preacher is notable mainly for its extremely strong character-building and its focus on storytelling, the handling of religious and supernatural themes in an unapologetic way (which many may find objectionable), the extremely dark and frequently violent humor, and the wide range of influences from outside comics.
In particular, Preacher draws on western movies for many of the stylistic elements (and openly acknowledges it - an apparition of John Wayne is a recurring character which serves as a sort of spiritual guide for Custer).
Preacher is a comic book created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, published by the Vertigo imprint of DC Comics, with painted covers by Glenn Fabry.

Preacher's Divinity: jesse custer, tulip, cassidy
This gorgeous color collection of the original painted covers to the recently-concluded "Preacher" series is a great overview of how, month after month, Fabry's powerful art unified the series and made it one of the most distinctive and outrageous on the comic book stands.
PREACHER has taken the art of graphic literature to new heights.
With its hard stance on religion and cultural ritual, PREACHER propels the reader into a new realm of thought.

mtv.com - News - 'X-Men' Actor James Marsden Turns To God, Guns And Vampires
Filled with dark humor, grim violence and iconoclasm, "Preacher" centers on fallen evangelist Jesse Custer who, feeling that God has abandoned humanity, sets out to find Him with gun-toting gal pal Tulip and Irish vampire Cassidy in tow.
The brainchild of Irish writer Garth Ennis, "Preacher" was one of the breakout titles to emerge from DC Comics' edgy, adult-themed Vertigo line of comics.
Throughout its lengthy run, "Preacher" dealt with Jesse's upbringing, his belief system, the "Saint of Killers" on his trail, his persistent visions of John Wayne's ghost, and the massive superpower he can summon called "Word of God," which can make anyone do whatever he wants.

Amazon.ca: Preacher: Ancient History: Books
While technically the fourth book in the Preacher series, Ancient History isn't part of the main Preacher story line and doesn't even use any of the main characters (Reverend Jesse Custer, his girlfriend, Tulip, and his vampire buddy Cassidy).
Ennis and Dillon have created a cast of characters and a chain of events in "Preacher" that all feed one another in their own wonderfully twisted psychotic eco-system.
As some of the longer graphic novel series are wont to do at times (see Sandman, for example), Ennis introduces a 'break' to the Preacher arc with "Ancient History," temporarily halting plot development and placing several Preacher characters outside the timeline.

City Pages - COMICS: Preacher: Proud Americans
Hence, Preacher: Proud Americans tells the story of Reverend Jesse Custer, the mortal whose merging with this angelic/demonic hybrid spirit instills within him incredible powers, as well as a hankerin' to kick the Almighty's ass.
This is the third collection following the tales of the Preacher, and arguably the most fascinating to date.
Proud Americans provides some wonderfully illuminating insights into Custer's late father through a retelling of one of his grim Vietnam escapades, and also divulges the origin of Custer's 97-year-old Irish-vampire sidekick Cassidy.

Preacher was going to be the enemy for a long time - that strange, pretentious book about a man of the cloth taking on God.
Basically, "Preacher" posits that God Almighty is just some wanker who has enjoyed lording it over his subjects, but that the moment a challenge arose, he scarpered off like a schoolyard bully.

That such a naïve suggestion could even be seriously articulated in as cynical and dark a text as Preacher (particularly when it's delivered by an ex-porn actor), shows the broadness of the canvas with which Ennis paints.
After that (and a rousing backstory on Tulip's childhood and her meeting with Amy), she and Jesse are re-united proving one of Preacher's many themes: love is stronger than death.
In this, the penultimate instalment to the remarkable Preacher run, Garth Ennis sets the scene before it all comes crashing down in The Alamo.

Accompanying Jesse on his journey are Tulip O'Hare, Jesse's former girlfriend and One True Love, and Cassidy, a 100-year-old Irish vampire who seems to prefer a pint in the pub to the blood of the innocent.
Jesse and Tulip journey to France to rescue Cassidy from the Grail's heavily-guarded secret fortress, where Cassidy is being held and tortured by Herr Starr.
Upon their return to the States, a grateful Cassidy tells Jesse his life's story: how he fought in the Irish War of Independence, how he was killed and turned into a vampire, and how he began his long love affair with New York City.
