Scheduled for launch in 2007, CASSIOPE will initiate the pilot-phase of a new information delivery service called Cascade that will allow very large amounts of information to be delivered to decision-makers anywhere in the world.
CASSIOPE will also include an innovative scientific probe carrying a suite of eight scientific instruments, called ePOP, developed by a scientific team led by the University of Calgary.
With the success of the CASSIOPE mission, as demand increases, capacity could be expanded by adding additional satellites.

Canada Funds Small Satellite Platform Demonstration
The Cassiope mission, scheduled for launch in 2007, will carry a demonstration communications payload and a scientific payload on a new small satellite platform that will be developed by Canadian industry, officials from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates said Feb. 6.
Cassiope will demonstrate that a Ka-band transponder can receive, store and transmit data at high speeds, said Logan Duffield, another director of business development for McDonald Dettwiler.
The payload, which will be developed by a team led by the University of Calgary, will collect data on the sun and space storms in the polar ionosphere, a region in the upper atmosphere, and measure their impact on communications, GPS navigation signals and other space-based technologies.

Cassiope was thrilled at the thought of meeting the tribe she had only heard about in legend and had to be physically restrained from pushing her sturdy little mount into a headlong gallop in an effort to get there quicker.
Eponin, upon being informed privately by Gabrielle that it might be a good idea that she became Cassiope's guardian while the child was in their village, had introduced herself to the young girl and regaled her with tales of Amazon battles long past, promising to teach her about the staff.
Cassiope, completely captivated by the gruff warrior woman, fell asleep in her lap, and after asking Callisto's permission, the royal guard bore the little girl off to the dormitory where most of the Amazons not yet bonded resided.

ABSTRACT: Little Ice Age temperature estimated by growth and flowering differences between subfossil and extant shoots of Cassiope tetragona, an arctic heather.
A unique opportunity to study conditions for plant growth at the onset of glaciation was offered as a retreating glacier at Ellesmere Island, Canada, revealed well-preserved, subfossil plants (411 plus or minus 70 radio-carbon years old) of Cassiope tetragona, an arctic dwarf-shrub previously used to study climate-related growth of modern plants.
The results support the idea that the pre-Little Ice Age plants were killed suddenly by permanent snow embedment and not by glacial movements or temperature limitations as such.
