The Casspir is a mine-protected armoured personnel carrier that was originally developed for the counter-insurgency units of the police.
The Casspir mine-protected vehicle (MPV) was one of the first to use the V-shaped monocoque hull and is undoubtedly one of the world's leaders in its field with over 2000 in service in several countries and an enviable record as a life preserver in mine incidents.
The Casspir hull consists of a welded all-steel monocoque capsule to which the highly-effective leaf-spring suspension is attached, and within which the main automotive and other components and protection to both occupants and main components are housed to facilitate rapid field repair.

In August 1998, India purchased 90 'reconditioned' Casspirs for the Army and Para-Military forces in Jammu & Kashmir.

The Casspir — an anagram of the acronyms SAP (SA Police) and CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) — was designed in the late 1970s and introduced to police and later military service in the 1980s.

Casspir weapons carrier variants exist (at left) but such roles would be best left to Coyotes, LAV IIIs, or other CF wheeled types better protected from small arms fire.
Still, Casspir defences could be easily improved by replacing that rooftop machinegun position with the Protected Weapon Station.
Casspirs are right-hand drive, which is a complicating factor for the CF but not insurmountable (CF Casspirs will need to be stripped and rebuilt in any case).

THE names of three people who died in a horrific collision between an army casspir and a Government tanker are yet to be released.
Witnesses say the Namibia Defence Force (NDF) casspir was travelling east on the highway at Rundu when a Government tanker suddenly turned into the road.

Aubrey "Magidi" Radebe, told the TRC's amnesty committee that in 1991 he and other members of the African National Congress-aligned SDU planned to attack and disarm a group of policemen in a Casspir at Phola Park squatter camp.
During the exchange one policeman was killed, but Radebe said he did not know who fired the fatal shot.
