As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 1,233.
In the township the population is spread out with 20.0% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who are 65 years of age or older.

Business must have been booming for the Castanea Brewery with the expanding railroads, extensive lumber industry, mining, and the claypits which were located adjacent to the brewery; all bringing thirsty workers to the area.

Castanea Township will begin accepting bids for pump station/force main upgrades and sewer line replacement projects starting in March.
The Clinton County Planning Commission approved a plan by Castanea Township to abandon its proposed sewer system holding tank in that community in favor of another concept.
The initial meeting of the Clinton County Sewer Authority Thursday night was hailed as a milestone in the county.

The majority of the trout streams in Pennsylvania are within easy access to the fishing public, however, there are remote trout streams on State Forest lands that provide an opportunity for walk-in fishing, away from the crowds and a highly mechanized society.
As Pennsylvania's forests age into later second growth throughout much of the State Forest system, large and/or dead trees and canopy gaps are not as abundant as in old growth forests.

In 1956, the highway was widened at the interchange with the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Bedford.
Construction began in 1974 on sections from PA 477 to the Castanea Township line and from the Susquehanna River to Avis.
As other expressway projects in Pennsylvania, an open house was held on October 26, 2002 called a "Roll and Stroll." Around 1,000 people are estimated to have walked, biked, skated and strolled along the new expressway.

Cuscuta cuspidata was found in the floodplain of Marie De Larme Creek in Van Wert County and St. Mary's River, same stream system where Leersia lenticularis Michx was found by McCormac (1993).
The locality is within the Edge of Appalachia Preserve System co-owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy and the Cincinnati Museum Center.
